What are these things called?

Can anyone help me find jersey knit type cuffs similar to the type you find on sleeves of sweatshirts or the bottom of jogging trousers.

Ds2 has a lovely little fleecy all-in-one that is really warm but his arms and legs are quite long so I thought to stitch new 'thingies' on to his little suit and it will do him for winter.

It does not have to be jersey - any stretchy fabric would do but can you buy ready made cuffs/ankle things?

Am watching this with interest. Coincidentally, I want to lengthen Ds's school coat sleeves by putting some of these into his cuff area. Been racking my brains as to where they could be bought too.

GO, I have shortened sleepsuits by turing a tuck into the legs. You need to stitch it twice ~ once inside and once outside. It worked very well.

I thought about unpicking some from a sweatshirt but the cotton/stretchy/knitty stuff seemed too big and floppy yet I have seen these cuff type things somewhere, maybe years ago.

I tried knitting little legwarmers on a circular needle but ended up making a scarf for dd's dolly.

use socks?

but apparentl;y ypu can buy them...

GentleOtter · 14/11/2008 09:34

This is the suit here - they are really wide suits but the legs and arms are quite short.
Okker Gokker are really good and mightily expensive normally but I picked this one up in a sale and it has been excellent.

any good?

MrsBadger · 14/11/2008 09:37

they have it in navy but not cheap

GentleOtter · 14/11/2008 09:39

Oh, that is the very thing MrsBadger! It won't matter about the colour as he will be wearing socks too- it is very cold here.

Many thanks

I totally misread the OP as wanting to shorten the suit! sorry...

If you knit, you could knit little tiny blue legwarmers for him, i knitted the little boy of a friend of mines some leg warmers and he wore them last winter all the time, over his trousers.

just an idea.

good luck

Thanks for that blunt and a great idea.
I started a patchwork blanket for my 1st son (now 25), did a little more for dd and found the bag of 12 knitted rectangles recently. - I'm not a very fast knitter.

It took five minutes to stitch the seams and now ds2 has warm ankles (of different colours)

in aus you can buy proper cuffs and knit collors in a variety of colours that usually go with matching fleece or jersey. but i have only ever seen it the once here.

normally i would use what is called ribbing but I am not sure what its called in this country as i hardly ever find it on ebay and usually never in the shops although i know its out their as i managed to get several metres in different colours when i was making my maternity clothes a couple of years ago.

CatRace · 14/11/2008 21:24

You could use an oddment of fleece and make a cuff like you sometimes get on a fleece jacket - there should be enough stretch. I've done this to a ridiculous fleece jacket I bought from ebay for DS, it had too-short, too-wide sleeves but was otherwise fine.

CatRace · 14/11/2008 21:25

(tries to summon up courage to type "ribbed cuffs" into ebay)

CatRace · 14/11/2008 21:31

bingo

I'm sure they'd sell a small piece.

CatRace · 14/11/2008 21:32

Sorry am so dopey, you're all sorted!

GentleOtter · 16/11/2008 11:19

CatRace - that was brave of you to Google
Dh washed my beloved hat (which is made of paper) and someone told me there was stuff called "Stiffy" that would restore it.

I learned a thing or two Googling that but it does exist.
