crochet for beginners - hopelessly lost

I can knit (although I struggle to follow patterns - just know the basic knit/purl stitches) and thought crochet would be easy(ish). I've borrowed a book from the library with the basic steps together with some 'simple' projects, and was going to try to make a couple of small things for people for Christmas. Trouble is, I can't even follow the instructions and diagram to make the very first stitch, let alone make the foundation chain. I don't know whether my book ('I love crochet') is just not particularly clear, or whether I'm just not suited to this, but can anyone point me in the direction of a very simple website (I've obviously googled but there are so many and I really need something simple that really works!) to help me out. Any words of wisdom for a keen but exasperated novice? Thank you!

You need the Happy Hooker book - order it through your library? - got me started (and I just can't stop )

Try the inner child crochet site, Robyn's designs are lovely and their are left and right hand videos to watch of all the stitches. The happy hooker book is american and has different names for the stitches to english patterns, also the how tosectionis great but their are lots of mistakes in the paterns. I'd recommend learning american style terminology as the is a much greater choice of patterns. It grows much faster than knitting too, good luck
