Knitting- what's garter stitch? Is it what we'd call 'plain' in the UK?

Just every row is a knit row

yes - plain.

i would think of "plain" as stockinette (i.e. knit 1 row, purl next row) - how most jumpers etc look.

garter as soremummy said is every row knit so it looks kinda bumpy, not smooth like stocking stitch.

garter looks the same both sides, stocking stitch has front and back.

Ah, I see, so I should have asked if a garter stitch is the same as a 'knit' stitch. 'Plain' is a type of style like 'rib', ie a combination of different stitches! Sorry, got confused! Is stockinette and stocking the same? I realise they're UK and US terms!
