Knitting - how to get started

I want to learn to knit and bought a magazine to have a look at ideas and projects. Feel a bit lost though as I have not done any knitting since school.
Any good books I could buy?
What small projects would be good to start on?

i would suggest looking at this site. it has good videos that will get you started, or refresh your memory. i'd practice a bit, and then take a trip to your lys and browse mags / books and pick something to get started with.

And join Ravelry and search for a local group

i recently asked similar question. was recommended stitch n bitch book.

it's fabby. 2 weeks later and i'm almost finished a baby scarf.

the pictures are good and instructions are very clear.

I started about a month ago you need:

Stitch and Bitch Book
A Wool/needle shop with helpful staff
A good friend that knits who you can phone anytime when things go wrong!
A church group of knitters to support you (I joined my local methodist club - they are fantastic I am the youngest there by about 30 years and they have taught me loads plus they make lovely cakes!)
I have started with scarves and baby blankets!

I'd start with a scarf too.

I bought some lovely wool a couple of weeks ago that is multicoloured and designed to come out stripy without having to change balls or anything complicated. This is the stuff.

One ball, cast on 30 stitches on 4mm needles, knit to the end of the ball. Very simple and very effective.

Our good local wool shop does classes and has knitting groups too so you could try that if you have one locally.
