I want to make a patchwork quilt

Where do I start?

Do I need a sewing machine?

Anyone have a real simple patten?

Hi all, im new to mumsnet, and found the site looking for quilting tips, Im also going to try and start quiltmaking,as im at home recovering from spinal surgery and thought it would be a nice hobby, and teach me some patience! sadly here I cant find any local classes, so thanks for the tips guys, I will search tutorials. Oggsfrog, your quilt is truly beautiful, how did you do those shapes? how many did you start to sew together? I would love to make one like that in the future when practiced it looks great! thanks for the tips, Im really inspired to get going now!!!

well i've just started a quilt and i don't have a machine.

i've been a bit ambitious and chosen an arabic design. so i:

drew a large size of the design and cut out templates.
cut out pieces of fabric round the templates leaving prob about a 1cm hem.
tacked the material onto each template
sewed the pieces together

loving it so far!
