I'm looking for a new hobby for the winter. I would Luke something that won't take over my entire house but something to create that I can give away that people would be happy to receive. I'm no good at sewing, I have done a bit of crocheting before so might dig that out again. I'm a good cook and already do a lot of that, so all suggestions welcome.

I think I’d like a new hobby too, since my kids went to uni I feel like I’ve got a lot of time on my hands on an evening. My job is hard work, and I just tend to spend the evenings and weekends on my phone as I don’t have the headspace for much else.

I think that things people would be happy to receive would be things to eat. Baking, chocolates, fudge etc?

Imtoooldforallthis · 18/08/2026 12:23

I think I want something different to food. Last year I made some lovely air dried clay christmas ornaments that went down well. I just don't want to do colouring or jigsaws if you know what I mean.

Crochet works well for me. So much variety in what to make from blankets to toys to socks to shawls. Some more portable than others, some need more brain power and some are quite mindless.

There was a similar thread recently I'll link if I can find it. I crochet and knit, but would say beginner. I watch youtube clips, stop, start etc to learn a new pattern.
This isn't the thread I was thinking of, but might have some ideas.

I also make pictures using seaglass. You can buy deep frames from B&M, The Range etc

Lino cut prints can be done at home. You can make cards or tea towels or just pictures.

Glass painting? Water colours? Start with inktober? Macrame for those type of hanging house plants.

I've recently got into beading - just simple sun catchers using old/broken jewellery but I've quickly become obsessed - there's lots of online tutorials to make bracelets and earrings, spiders, etc. It doesn't take up too much space and they make good presents.

Imtoooldforallthis · 18/08/2026 20:22

Some great suggestion I'm going research some of these ideas.

Wood burning! I make personalised Christmas decorations and lots more and they’re always well received (I do have quite neat writing though!) You need a decent wood burning gadget to set you off (not the cheap wands, one with a temperature control)
….or beading, you can make lovely bracelets with stretch magic and beads (seal knots with clear nail varnish)

CaramelEmporium · 18/08/2026 21:13

If you’re near a beach sea glass pictures?

P00hsticks · 19/08/2026 10:37

Card making ? Allows for a lot of different techniques and are good to give

Imtoooldforallthis · 19/08/2026 13:47

Well I've made a start, been to Aldi and they had some lovely baby knitting sets for £4.99 so bought a Peter Rabbit blanket kit. Also they had some macrame yarn which I might have a go crocheting a bag.

What about cross stitch? I really enjoy it and it doesn’t take up much space.

I came on to say cross stitch. You can get some really good kits on vinted, I bought a few rude ones recently to give as gifts for Christmas.

I would probably enjoy doing it but not sure that I know anyone that actually likes it to gift to.

I darent start another craft. Think dh might mutiny. I've made a decision though not to do something just because. I ask will someone actually want and use what I give them? Will it take up space(pottery) Will it end up in a charity shop?(I find that heartbreaking, you see gorgeous blankets or shawls and no one wants them). Saying that, I've made needle felted baubles, not Christmas, but a sheep, a rabbit and daffodils for easter. Currently, im embroidering pillowcases. I got some 70s transfers with funky designs and some white pillowcases. Im using them, love them. And im fancying tatting.
My name is OhWhat and Im a craft junkie.Grin

Yeah I think I was just thinking what I would like to receive. Food can be eaten and then it’s gone. My grandmother used to decoupage pictures and frame them and give them for gifts, and while it’s a lovely thing having someone make something for you, it was never what I wanted to hang on my walls.

i loved getting cardigans and blankets when my children were little, and I’d love a cardigan for myself now! I do like macrame things as well. I don’t think I’d want things to display, as my house is quite minimalist and I’ve already got things where I want things.

French wire beading - dd does it and you can make something amazing pretty quickly

Kirschcherries · Today 21:20

Card making - you can incorporate lots of different techniques e.g. small cross stitch you mount, water colour paintings, stamping that you colour in, die cutting, quilling etc.

Go on YouTube and there are loads of crafters showing you how to make cards.

I like making notebooks/ sketchbooks. You don't need much for that and chances are you already have some of the tools/ supplies lying around. It's not a difficult craft, I don't think, but it does benefit from a certain level of precision.

There are loads of tutorials available online and different 'styles' to choose from. If you're interested have a look at coptic binding, for something that's not that difficult, but looks completely different from what you find in the shops.
