My best friend is very early in her pregnancy and I committed THE cardinal sin!! I showed her a post here where a person was talking about calling a kid named Sebastian “Sea Bass Stain.” She started crying and told me that’s what she wanted to name her baby if it’s a boy…. Help me kindly make new suggestions. She wants it to start with an S… she doesn’t believe me saying Sebastian is a great name, and no normal person would call him “Sea Bass.”

St.John pronounced Sinjun.
This is exactly why you should never discuss names when you’re pregnant.

I have a Sebastian he’s been call bastion, Seb, sneb, snoob and pop pants but never sea bass stain!

Sebastian is a lovely name and I’ve never heard it shortened to Sea Bass.
What about Samuel?

Morepositivemum · 07/08/2026 09:38

Simon? Steven? Sam? Shane … it’s actually a very difficult letter!!!

Saul
Samuel
Sean
Seamus
Simeon

You clearly misjudged your friend's reaction. The only Sebastian I've met irl life was French and a lovely young man.

Sebastien would work.

Solomon.

LubyLoo · 07/08/2026 09:55

Seth, Silas, Sam, Stanley, Sylvester

Sebastian is a great name. There's no 'stain' sound in it. The 'i' comes before the 'a' in the last syllable. Seh-bass-tee-un. The ones I know get Seb or Bass

Other S names:

Samuel
Simon
Simeon
Seth
Severin
Silas
Saul
Stephen
Stefan

edited to say I love Sylvester and Solomon from PP's lists

Well I have a Sebastien, (named for a famous racing driver). He gets called Bas, Basi, Bastien, Seb, Sebi etc... It's a beautiful name and in all his nearly 16 years I've never heard what you used at all. so if she reads this then let her know that all versions of Sebastien are lovely and there are lots of them making great lives for themselves in the world.

I'd guess that early pregnancy hormones are playing havoc with her at the moment. Maybe lay off the name search for now and let her find something organically in time.

All my suggestions would only be via Google which she can do for herself.

And Sebastian is fine! The letters & sounds don’t even break down into Se(a) Bas(s) St(i)a(i)n.
