Does anyone crochet wearables?

I usually just make blankets (I've started a hexi cardi but never finished it) but would like to try wearables

I've only ever bought acrylic dk - Stylecraft - but don't want to make a top or cardi in acrylic

I'd like something budget friendly (in case I never finish it!) yarn wise - and wondered if anyone had any recommendation please?

I use cotton to make tops. You don’t want too much stretch. I don’t use acrylic but I guess it would wash. There’s loads of cotton yarn out there and I often get it from Hobbii or Lovecraft. Or Amazon.

Have a google. If you can do granny squares you can make jumpers and cardigans with these. Or you could start with a bucket hat - also granny squares and very easy.

Not sure if it yarn or pattern you'd like recommendations for. My first garment for an adult was Iron Lamb's Spring Rows Tank Top. I would recommend her patterns. They are written clearly. I used acrylic yarn, but for other projects have used and liked Yarnsmiths Wool DK, which is currently £3.50 from Wool Warehouse. If you're not already on Ravelry, I would recommend that too.

Spring Rows Tank top pattern by Iron Lamb

A Granny stitch tank top, made from the top down, meaning it can be easily customised to fit however you like. Make it plain or striped or use a colour changing yarn for easy colour work.

I follow craft and a cuppa . She does tutorial on you tube. She takes you step by step through the whole garment. I've just started the holey moley top.

If you’re looking for patterns Ravelry is your friend.

Here’s a filtered list of free crochet patterns for clothing, adult size, difficulty is “easy” or “piece of cake”, with photos, sorted by “most favourites” first.

If you see one you like, click on its photo and then “comments” and you can see what people (probably who have made it) think of it. If you click on the double arrows at the top of the page I linked you can also filter by type of garment, yarn weight and type…

Ravelry is different from MN in many ways. You can’t keep name changing, and people are usually identifiable. Most members are in the US but there are plenty in the UK.

Thanks everyone. I'm a half decent crocheter - i just don't want to buy the wrong yarn!

I'd like something lovely that drapes well. Will have a nosey at some of these recommendations as I usually just follow blanket hookers!

I find cotton quite hardwork. Try a wool or bamboo mix and make something small- I’ve just used a single ball bought in a sale to make an infinity scarf. So the yarn will have cost £3.50. It’s given me a good feel for how it behaves.
But a hat sounds ace- a friend has a crochet hat. It’s going on my project list!

I've made a couple of things.

I used a wool / acrylic mix for the Bella Coco Nova cardigan and acrylic for a cocoon cardigan, but they are not things you wear directly next to the skin.

If you want to make sure your yarn is perfect for the garment, maybe have a look at the free patterns on Drops design and buy the corresponding yarn - be warned though, some of them are really pricey!

I find 4 ply yarn is drapery. I buy the wolf and silky range from hobbycraft
