Easy way to adapt a dress

I have a dress in size 14 I want to make it more like a 12. It’s a simple up and down with short sleeves and darts on the bust. The back is plain and the front has a smocked panel across the bust and patch pockets joined into the side seams.

I was thinking of putting darts in the back ? Or coukd I reduce the back fabric by seaming up the middle? Both of which are probably wrong but my 3d brain isn’t working in the heat!

One thing you probably need to know is where it’s too big.

I’d put it on inside out and try pinning first. You can experiment with where best to make the alteration.

That will tell you where to reduce and how it’s likely to behave.

But yes, fish eye darts in the back are definitely an option!

You’ll also need ease for getting on and off so if you do split the back to add a seam you might also need to add a zip so you can get in and out of it!

@TragicMuse
Thankyou ! Yes good point as to where it needs altering. My shape is big on boob and slimmer below so I’m a 12-14 on top and 10 in trousers. I still want it to be loose and comfy but with a little less fabric on waist and hip area. Is that possible?

I imagined if I took it in on a back seam would the side seams ‘move around’ towards the back ?

I don't know if this would appeal to you, but I have a straight up and down cotton blend dress that is too wide. I got these elastic clips (see the way the white Tshirt is altered) and put one on the reverse (inside out). It works fine to bring the sides together at the back and the front is looking much less tent like lol!

It's only a summer dress for knocking around in but it's a nice one, so if your dress is fancier you might want to have it altered or diy as suggested above.

OK it is the unmentionable site, but sometimes it is just great for things like these.

It should be possible! What you might do once you know how much to take off is to distribute it across more than just the side seams so you don’t get big darts or shifting seams.
