Best outbuilding option for storing a large fabric collection?

I have a lot of fabric, less a stash more a hoard!

Although I call it a carefully curated collection!

Im moving and the most logical place for the fabric is in an outbuilding - either a new purpose built log cabin (with/without insulation) or a existing prefab concrete garage (again with/without insulation)

Currently they are stored in an unheated uninsulated (well all the insulation is in the floor) attic and that has been fine

Does anyone have any thoughts about the most appropriate space?

With that much fabric, I would honestly take the chance to offload any fabric you don't love as you prepare to move. Are you realistically ever going to manage to sew it all up?

You have been very lucky they haven't gone damp/mouldy!
In general for things like fabric I would say you either need insulation and airflow (so don't stack against walls), or to live in a dry climate (perhaps you do?), or you need to run a dehumidifier regularly.

The attic is pretty well ventilated

I am clearing them i promise but my long term aim is to have a recycled fabric shop for people to swop things, plus I run classes that use them

Insulation is definitely an option - currently they are in kallax with strapping to stop them falling out the back

I have a similar collection and coincidentally went from converted loft room to an insulated garden office when I moved house.

no issue with damp/ventilation but I have a wireless monitor for temp and humidity. And longer term am planning to drastically reduce what I’ve got!

How funny! I can't manage the stairs any more so moving is a necessity

I'd be interested in the monitor details if you get time - is your space a proper garden office thing?

Oh I dont know what to do

You have mentioned storage, but what about a craft room with storage? I am in the cellar at the moment and don't use it much because who wants to to hang out in a cellar and I am too easy to find. A log cabin at the end of the garden sounds perfect!

KatyMac · 09/04/2026 13:18

The craft room is a given, but the fabric storage doesnt have to be in the same space, - ill need to heat the craft room and heating storage seems silly

We can use the rest of the garage if I store round the edges whereas if I do the wood building it will cost more as it'll have to have both storage and workspace (large cutting table? Which can be flat packed in the garage)

I am leaning towards using the building I have and insulating it rather than replacing with new

But Ill need help!

I wonder if the open storage is the reason I dont have any damp/mould

Keter is a brand that sells a variety of sizes of sheds. All no maintenance as not wood. Something from them in your garden perhaps? Add old filing cabinets around the edges to store the folded fabric in.

Im fairly sure plastic would increase condensation but I like the filing cabinet idea
