Vintage overlocker ?

I have a Bernette MO 234 overlocker that has not been used for several years. It will cost about £120 to service. Looking online, I could buy a new Janome or Singer overlocker for £250 - £350. Is it worth investing in the Bernette? I know that in the 80s the Bernette was a very good machine, but are the current cheaper machines as good now?

Unless you go for a good overlocker, get your old one serviced. Do your research, but 250 - 350 is cheap and some brands / modern machines are not as good as older ones. Ask the repairer their opinion.

As above, get the old one serviced. New machines have a much shorter lifespan. Plus the learning curve of getting to know a new machine :)

It’s probably worth getting it serviced although I’m not that keen on Bernette machines. I have an expensive Bernette embroidery machine but I wish I’d bought the Brother one instead.

I definitely wouldn’t buy a cheap overlocker sub £500. After having a basic Brother overlocker for a few years, I saved up and bought a Babylock and my god, it’s like night & day. It’s so easy to use with auto thread tension and air threading. I sew almost everything on it. It was totally worth the outlay!

New or old, it would be the same learning curve. I did once learn to use an overlocker, which may or may not have been a Bernette, but who remembers after 30+ years 😅
