Is there some sort of gadget that will help me mark my place on a paper knitting pattern?

I’m imagining some sort of giant ruler that will clip on the pattern but I can’t find anything.

I have really dodgy vision and I keep losing my place.. any help would be great

You can place your pattern on a magnetic board and then mark with small magnets?

BoldNavyCritic · 20/03/2026 21:58

Can you not mark it with a pencil and then rub the marks off afterwards if you want to use it again? Or do this on a photocopy, if you don't want to mark the original?

Would a giant paperclip work for you? 📎

What about using sticky tabs or index markers (the stationery sort used to mark places in documents)?

izzyme · 20/03/2026 22:12

I have used paperclips and a long hair clip, although that can bend the paper slightly. I have also used the sticky note place markers. All with varying degrees of success.
The best way for me is to copy the pattern and mark off each row on the copy.
You will find your own best way in the end

Prym make a pattern marker or you can get bespoke ones from Etsy.

Magnetic board and magnet strips, I use for needlepoint charts

Thank you so much everyone, I really appreciate your suggestions, some of which I’ve tried and failed with already, and some I’ll definitely give a go.

Search document holder on amazon, these might be worth considering.

The other thing I sometimes do, especially if I’m taking my knitting or crochet out with me on a trip or something , is to take a picture of the pattern and view it on my iPad, then I use the edit/drawing tools to cross out the lines or tick them as I work through the pattern.

I tried magnetic knitting pattern holders but they didn't work for me, so now I either:

  • take a photo and save it as a pdf on my laptop, using the highlight function in different colours to mark where I am, what parts are already done and the text function to note what size I'm making and who for

or

-print a paper copy of the pattern to mark the above on-useful if taking my knitting etc out and about or when sitting in the garden.
(or sometimes a combination of both methods).

I use a post-it note and scribble tally marks on it for pattern repeats, etc. Replace as needed. Very high tech.

I use washi tape, it is reusable for quite a few applications and looks pretty. Also I love washi tape and need to use some or it!

Some Washi tape removes the printing and some of the paper, humph.

CocoKnits and KnitPro both do ‘maker’s boards’ which are magnetic folders you can put your pattern on. I haven’t tried either but they look quite good, so maybe one day I’ll get one. I just write all over my paper patterns if I’ve printed a copy or just use the pdf on my ipad.
