How can I shorten the sleeves of this jumper?

I bought this open-knit mohair jumper on Vinted. I love it, but the sleeves are far too long and look silly rolled up. I cannot knit, but do have some knitting needles in the house. Can anyone suggest how to shorten the sleeves neatly? Thanks.

Have you got a picture ?

Sorry it hadn't shown up when I posted.
Could you roll the sleeves to the length you want and just stitch then in place ?

HermitCrabby · 20/03/2026 17:00

I think the wrist is too tight for that and the knit too see-through. I need to shorten by about 20 cm.

I bet if you knew someone who is really good at knitting they could unpick the sleeve head from the armhole, unravel the sleeve head, take out enough rows to make it the right length, then re-knit the sleeve head with the shaping and reinsert into the armhole. Back in the day my mum would have been able to do this, but unfortunately she died over 20 years ago and would have been over 100 if she was still alive today! Also unfortunately her knitting skills were not inherited.

@carpool The knitter in my family also died more than 20 years ago and nobody took on the mantle. None of my friends knit.

I am debating unpicking from the wrist, threading onto a knitting needle at the right length and blanket stitching to prevent unraveling, but have no idea whether this would work.

If you are able to unpick and then thread onto a knitting needle, then you don't need to do blanket stitch, you could just cast off the stitches in the normal way. If you are not sure how to do this there are probably U-tube videos that might help.

Scissors and enjoy the hour you wear it before it's just a ball of wool.

Scampuss · 21/03/2026 11:28

Before you do any unpicking (which can be a right faff with mohair!) you must add a lifeline (google for how to do this)!

I can't see a seam in your pics, can you see if it's been knitted in the round or in rows and seamed?

HermitCrabby · 21/03/2026 17:03

@carpool @Scampuss

Thanks for the suggestions. There isn’t an obvious seam but a sort of ladder of slightly looser stitches where one might be do I think knitted in the round. I’ve photographed and it will appear shortly.

What about cutting the sleeves a bit longer than you want them and folding them up a little and sewing a matching or contrasting ribbon around to finish and secure the stitches. Machine sewing should lock the cut stitches but you could also use fabric glue under the ribbon.

That would be really hard to get right for an amateur!

My suggestion would be to ruche the sleeves with a running stitch or buy sleeve garters.

Or just buy arm garters to hold sleeves in place. Use the extra length to cover the garters.
