Welcome and welcome back oldies and newbies!

Whatcha doin? What are your plans? I need some inspo. It's been a long time since i've approached my machine for various reasons. My favourite ever make has been a stretch dress, i'd wear it all the time if I could. I live in fear of the day I try to go to Barry's fabrics and it's gone. The Birmingham fabric scene is being decimated. What'll I do?!

Hello sewing people! Dropping in for some advice from the knowledgable…

Intending to attempt to make some seat cushions for a set of wooden dining chairs. The sort with two sets of ties at the back corners to tie it to the chair back.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a pattern, source of suitable fabric & filler in Birmingham, or any other general advice about this?

Thank you!

The Bestie bag is made, although not without some swearing and a lot of unpicking! I’d definitely recommend the pattern though - the mistakes were all mine. Can’t wait to make a second!

I love the bestie bag, I’ve made a few for friends and myself. I made a lovely one from a size 14 Harris tweed skirt that I bought from vinted but my favourite one was for my daughter with what was left over from a pair of trousers. She regularly gets comments about the bag and trousers as the fabric is pretty unique.

Fabulous!

Can I ask which zips and interfacing you use, please? My daughter is clamouring for one and I also want to make one for a friend for Christmas, as well as another one (or 2 or 3) for myself.

I’ve just used #5 continuous zip that I’ve cut to size and added two zipper pulls that face each other. I don’t remember using any interfacing, if I did it would be a lightweight fuseable one.

Thank you. I know nothing and am getting overwhelmed by all the different options online!

I have a couple of the Uniqlo satin bias skirts that are too loose. I am thinking of taking them in but being bias cut, will it be a nightmare?

I’m making a shirt for a friend who’s (hopefully temporarily) paralysed down one side. All going well (curved hem was challenging 😬) and I have used velcro for the closure with fake buttonholes on top (will also be sewing buttons on).

Only when I went to test the alignment of the velcro, I realised I have sewn one side of the velcro on the wrong side of the button band FFS. 🙄 The perils of late-night sewing!

Hi Flossie! I think the problem with chair cushions is that they are 'custom' to the chair seat shape. So no patterns really, but on the upside, there will probably be a load of blogs about it (mainly US).https://thesimplehomeplace.com/how-to-sew-a-diy-custom-chair-cushion-with-ties/

I've not done much sewing recently - I've patched a pair of MrKitty's jeans as they were getting very draughty around the nethers.

My Bestie bag was admired by the young girls selling poppies at the train station today, so that was nice. I’ve ordered ten zips, so I see many Besties in the future.

Somebody will be along who knows far more than I do, but when I’ve made simple bias cut skirts they’re literally just two side seams and an elasticated waist, so fairly straightforward to take in, I think. However, the ready to wear one I have from Arket has a zip on one side, which would complicate things.

I’ve not sewed much recently. DH trouser repair has put me off. I’ve managed to find the denim look stretch jacquard I bought from Abakhan years ago and I’m going to make another pair of Sinclair Helens with jeans style topstitching. I had thought about using it for an actual jeans pattern but it’s a bit too stretchy. Then I’m planning on using up some of the sweater knits I got in mystery boxes to make some cardigans.

I really prefer summer sewing so I expect my sewjo to vanish completely for a while.
