What can I knit with this huge ball of wool (I’m a beginner!)

Bought this 400g ball of navy wool today in a charity shop for £4.99! It’s huge! (Mug for scale). I’m a beginner and have only knitted a scarf and hat so far, also half way through a cowl.

I’d love to hear any ideas of what to knit with this?? Does anyone have any very easy to follow patterns for this amount of wool? Thank you

I’d knit a Sophie Scarf from Petit Knit. The short version which is like a bandana. It’s quick, easy and satisfying

Yes some fingerless gloves..
So simple and easy.
Ill give you my pattern now.
Cast on 30 st.
Rib for 10 rows.
Then stocking stich for 10 rows.
Then stocking stich 6 more rows but on the purl rows knit the first three stiches.. then continue with purl.
Then stocking stich 3 rows.
Then rib 5 rows and cast off.
Fold in half and sew seams together missing out the 6 rows where you knitted the first 3 stiches ( these form the thumb holes).
( see photo).

I'd knit a hot water bottle cover - it takes about 100g. And probably a scarf.

Hot water bottle cover
4.5mm needles
Cast on 60 stitches. Place a stitch marker at 30 stitches – the halfway point. This will make it easier to know the middle – as this cover is folded in half and seamed up at the end.
Knit 1 row
Purl 1 row
K2, make 1, knit to 3 before the stitch marker, make 1, knit 2, slip marker, k2, make 1, knit to last 3, make 1, k2 – (64 stitches)
Purl row
K2, make 1, knit to 3 before the stitch marker, make 1, knit 2, slip marker, k2, make 1, knit to last 3, make 1, k2 – (68 stitches)
Purl row
K2, make 1, knit to 3 before the stitch marker, make 1, knit 2, slip marker, k2, make 1, knit to last 3, make 1, k2 – (72 stitches)
Stocking stitch the next 50 rows. (Knit one row, purl one row)
K2, Knit 2 together, knit to 2 before the stitch marker, SSK, knit 2, slip marker, k2, SSK, knit to last 2, Knit 2 together, k2 – (68 stitches)
Purl row
K2, Knit 2 together, knit to 2 before the stitch marker, SSK, knit 2, slip marker, k2, SSK, knit to last 2, Knit 2 together, k2 – (64 stitches)
Purl row
K2, Knit 2 together, knit to 2 before the stitch marker, SSK, knit 2, slip marker, k2, SSK, knit to last 2, Knit 2 together, k2 – (60 stitches)
Purl row
Knit 2, Purl 2 rib – Complete this over the next 24 rows
Cast off with around 40cm of yarn tail remaining. Use this tail to stitch up the side and bottom of your cover.

SSK is very simple and you can google it on Youtube.

I'm just knitting with those 400gr balls (it will be aran weight so 4.5 or 5mm needles), one ball has knitted the front and back of an extra large man's hoodie so it should be enough for a sleeveless jumper which seem to be fashionable at the moment (tank top as we called them in my youth😂).

Thanks for all the suggestions, think I fancy knitting the Sophie Shaw which sounds like a bigger version of the scarf. @CharlotteSometimes1 I’ve found a pattern but have no idea what it means 😳 Any good websites / YouTube channels to explain it??

Which bits don't you understand?

If it's the overall pattern, then just search 'Sophie Shawl' on YouTube and you'll find lots of tutorials. You might need to watch a few videos until you find a tutorial style that works for you.

Your wool looks like aran weight, so the scarf may be slightly larger and thicker than the original (Sophie Shawl pattern is usually for slightly thinner DK weight yarn), but it should still be a nice scarf/shawl to wear.

I've knit it a few times and it's a fun knit.

I really like these and would like to have a go. Do you use double knit wool? And what size needles? Thank you!

I’ve found some good YouTube channels about how to do an icord and now I need to find one about increasing stitches. I’ve managed 4 rows so far 🙌🏼

knitting the Sophie Shawl an it’s coming along nicely and I am now totally addicted to knitting while
watching the Winter Olympics 🧶🥰

I came here to say you should get a nice big cat to play with it. But seeing as you've used some already.... a nice medium-sized cat to play with it!

Ilikeyoursleeves · 10/02/2026 19:30

Ha just as well I don’t have a cat or my shawl would be wrecked already! 🤣

Very true! But it's also a good excuse if you accidentally drop a stitch or two: "Oh the flipping cat's been messing with my knitting!"
