Knitting V crocheting?? What’s easiest / more satisfying?

Ilikeyoursleeves · 25/01/2026 15:54

Ive only just started knitting and made a lovely scarf and hat within a few weeks. It seemed quite easy to master and results were quick and I got a total buzz!

Now trying out crocheting and I am soooo frustrated! The wool
is tiny as are the stitches and I can’t seem to follow the YouTube videos and I’m ultra frustrated! Tried and pulled apart my work about ten times now!

Is one easier over the other? Do I just need to persist?? Any tips or good videos to watch?

Crocheting is easier.

Kkotting is more satisfying and produces nicer items.

Learn with chunky wool and big hook from written instructions. I find YouTube impossible.

IsThisAkissingBook · 25/01/2026 15:56

I find crochet easier but much prefer knitting, especially socks. Look at winwick mum sock a long. Honestly it's really easy and addictive, especially on short circular needles.

Fingalscave · 25/01/2026 15:58

I find crochet easier and much quicker to grow.
I get bored with knitting although I enjoy small projects.

anotheruser76326 · 25/01/2026 16:05

I can’t knit at all, well I can but it always looks rubbish. I can crochet very easily now, but it took me years to learn. I went on a course and it finally just clicked for me. I think it’s common to find it hard, but you will get there and likely find it easier once you have.

RaininSummer · 25/01/2026 16:06

I do both and think both have their uses and charms. Why are you finding the wool so tiny in crochet? What are you making as you can use all weights of wool just as you can in knitting.

HeadyLamarr · 25/01/2026 16:08

I think people tend towards one or the other in terms of ease. I'm a crochet fan, my Mum was a knitter.

Both have their strengths. For crochet, start with granny squares. They're lovely and simple

LadyCampanulaTottington · 25/01/2026 16:08

I tried to learn to knit but it took an age to see any progress on projects.

I taught myself to crochet about 10 years ago and never looked back. I love it. It’s easy to learn and you can make really intricate designs.

Look at Crochet Crowd on YouTube

On YouTube there's a lady called Bella Coco who has some great beginner videos, I also like the crochet crown but they are American and the terms are different so until you're familiar with them both I'd stick to one or the other! 🧶

Silverbirchleaf · 25/01/2026 16:09

I love knitting , but struggle to crochet. Tried more than one occasion, but just can’t seem to get the hang of it.

GallonHat · 25/01/2026 16:10

Crochet is easier, knitting is better!

Canadian actually but he uses US crochet terms. It’s really simple to “translate”.

I think its horses for courses. I cantbknit to save my life, always end up adding stitches and having to unravel the whole thing but enjoy crocheting. My mum just cant get the hang of crochet butvk its really well.

WWomble · 25/01/2026 16:11

I find crochet far easier. Change your yarn to something bulkier and use a bigger hook. Starting crochet it took me a long while to get my hand shape right - around the yarn, hold the hook and crochet!

FrothyCothy · 25/01/2026 16:15

Love crochet. Have only ever knit one thing and it was so intensely frustrating. I don’t know how to fix my mistakes in knitting but in crochet I can just go back a few rows and keep going. Knitting is definitely more versatile though!

Same here, not sure why! Am going to have a more sustained go at crochet with some odds and ends of chunky wool left over from baby blankets and see how it goes.

Any tips?

KnottyKnitting · 25/01/2026 16:19

I am a pretty good, if slow, knitter- had no problems learning through online tutorials. I have tried to learn crochet a number of times but I just can’t get the hang of it. I think perhaps if I had tuition in person, as opposed to you tube tutorials, I might get on better with it.

Ilikeyoursleeves · 25/01/2026 16:23

I knitted a really chunky scarf and hat using 12mm needles and I’m now using a 5mm crochet hook and thin (probably more normal size) wool so it just seems so small in comparison! I mastered the chain stitch fine but I’m totally stuck on the UK double crochet stitch and keep messing it up. Maybe I need to use a bigger hook??

It took me a long time to get to grips with crochet but once you can do it, it's great. I don't think either is necessarily easier or better than the other (although I haven't done any overly complicated knitting). I like how crochet works up a lot quicker and you can make really cute amigurumi stuff. Knitting has a different flow and I personally I prefer knitted clothing to crochet which is much chunkier/thicker and less soft imo. On the other hand the fact crochet is less soft and more structured means it can better for some projects than knitting.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 25/01/2026 16:29

Try with a very flat yarn, string perhaps. It makes the stitches clearer.
Don’t try something where you make an oblong like you do in knitting. Crochet is less about rows and more about sequences of stitches.

Granny squares are a great place to start. They teach you the basic stitches very fast. Then I like a snood or infinity scarf, as they are crocheted in the round.

boredsolicitor · 25/01/2026 17:00

Another vote for Bella coco videos on you tube to learn the basics

Hedgehog23 · 25/01/2026 17:06

My theory is that whatever you learn first is easier to learn. I would try and in person crochet class though. I managed to get the hang of it and I am very uncoordinated so if I can do it, I suspect most people can.

I find crocheting into a chain tricky. I usually go up a needle size and also use a second ball of yarn (but that’s more so I can adjust th length of chain in case I miscounted). However, granny squares don’t need a chain so I think they are an easier start.

You choose the wool and the hook size! There's no reason why it needs to be tinier than the wool you use when knitting.
Thicker yarn, bigger hook = bigger stiches.

If I see a mistake several rows back in knitting I can just drop the stitch or stitches with the mistake, correct it and then knit that stitch back up. There are lots of how-to articles online, eg here.

In crochet you have to pull back all the rows you’ve crocheted since your mistake.

I’d agree with many of the posters above. Crochet is quicker to learn, and you can do very complicated patterns early on. It also uses more yarn. I can knit and watch TV, especially plain stocking or garter stitch patterns, but I need to look at my crocheting. Some of my friends don’t, though.

HalzTangz · 05/02/2026 18:05

I personally find knitting preferable as I prefer the look of the finished project, crochet is useful for quicker to make projects but I am yet to find a garment pattern for crochets that screams at me ' make me!'

user1471538283 · 10/02/2026 21:22

I crochet and I've done so for decades but I'm a poor knitter.

My DA taught me and I started with granny squares. I would try doing a one colour, one stitch granny squares. Eventually when you have enough of them you can make a blanket!
