I’ve been cross stitching for quite a while so decided to order a beginner embroidery to try. I’m a bit lost with the instructions!

Theres lots of parts where the stitch type isn’t labelled, do I guess?

Where multiple colours are listed, is that for shading? The skirt and the hair potentially have shading.

I’d appreciate any tips!! Many thanks

Surely there are more instructions than just that image?

frazzled101 · 24/01/2026 12:09

There’s just instructions on what the stitches are on the back, but that’s it. 1 single page!

The wings look like long and short stitch.

I can’t see how the skirt is satin stitchConfusedl think the rest is just stitches already on there.

It looks like an AI generated pattern which will be why the instructions are sketchy. It's a recipe for disappointment.

98p!!!! Ah well! I’ve realised it not going to match the picture but still might look ok.

@frazzled101 What you have done so far is lovely.

DMC do good patterns. This is their stitch guide https://www.dmc.com/GB/en-GB/sbs-embroidery-stitch-diagrams

I would keep going and don’t worry about getting the stitch type a perfect match. I always say the whole point of hand made items is each one is unique.

It'll be good practice for all the stitches and will still be pretty!

A little tip is to start and end your stitches just (everso only slightly just) past the outlines and that will make sure they're covered up. The tension of the stitch usually makes it a bit shorter than you're expecting.

The Royal School of Needlework stitch bank is a brilliant free resource for embroidery.

I would use a bit of calico and practice the same stitches using different thicknesses of threads and yarn . You can get great effects !

That picture looks tricky for a beginner!
