Knitting pattern sizes help

Help! I’ve rediscovered knitting after about 30 years and I want to knit myself a jumper using Sirdar Jewelspun. I can’t figure out what size I need though - I want size 16-18. I’m guessing these are chest sizes but I want confirmation. I can’t see anything on the site to guide me.

If you measure your chest, add the amount of 'ease' you want (ie how loose you want the sweater to be) you will find the size. It's not easy to tell from the pattern whether the measurements given are for the finished garment or for your body. Is there a 'sizing' link that's not in the photo?

Personally, I prefer jumpers to be loose, so would go for 52/54 to fit 16/18, but if you prefer yours more fitted, size down accordingly.

Thanks, I searched the site for a sizing guide and couldn’t find anything. I might email them perhaps. 52/54 sounds enormous though, even my size 20 hips are 48! Maybe I should measure the jumpers I already own.

I'm size 16/18 and would knit a finished size of 44/46 for myself for a fitted, but not snug, garment.

But yes, measure a jumper that you already own and like the fit of. And then make sure your gauge is correct when you start knitting.

This is the pattern page on Ravelry which shows the finished measurements for each size

https://ravel.me/10140-raglan-sweater

So the sizes shown in your photo are body measurements without ease.

That’s a good point about the gauge @MarmiteWine. I’m quite a loose knitter so I will double check the tension.

That’s brilliant, thank you so much for finding that.

Have fun knitting!

Thank you! I’ve knitted two beanies, three chickens and a snake since rediscovering it. Now brave enough to try a jumper.
