Good morning!

Planning on making our own wreath again this year but wanted to know if anyone has used a suitable alternative for moss base on a metal hoop?

Plenty of foliage but unsure what to use for base instead of moss.

First time making one last year in a class and the base was moss.

Thank you!

@Fe2O3GirlOo thank you! Assuming this reduces the need for floral wire too?

Floral foam, oasis, is toxic, harmful to the environment and to people using it. It releases microplastics into the environment and contains phenol formaldehydes. There is a wool based alternative but I can’t remember the name of it.

If you get a straw ring online you can reuse it at least once and you reuse indefinitely the metal ring you attach it the ring to.

You can buy moss from any florist if that is what is putting you off using moss?

@GeneticsbunnyThank you. Do you know how much it roughly costs?

I used to use a wire coat hanger pulled into a circle, scrunched newspaper round it to puff it up then cover that in green paper. If you're careful with it and it doesn't get rained on it can last for a good few years.

I would then wire conifer, holly and other greenery I could find round it, add the decorative stuff then tie a red ribbon at the top and use the hook to hang it.

I normally buy half a bag, which is enough for about ten wreaths and it is around £20. They will also sell you a Christmas tree branch if you want a fancy looking wreath.

If you go in and say you are doing one wreath they will probably sell you a small amount of moss for a couple of quid.

I have made a wreath without moss. Bought a kit during lockdown and they purposedly didn't have moss. It was a metal frame and I think if I remember correctly you make the bunches as normal and just wire them to the frame. There were instructions on YouTube. Once you have a few bunches it becomes easier. If you can get moss then it is obviously easier although not so good for the environment

I must admit I have been very lazy and not made one for years.

I make wreaths most years and just use cuttings round a home made wire frame. They're not perfect but I like them. Takes a while to get the hang of it but can be done.

I ordered my moss wreath off Amazon last year. You can just reuse them each year. Ok think it was about £8

Thank you all. I ended up finding a big bag of moss in The Range of all places for £5! Here is the end result… not perfect but the kids had fun.
