Any cheap paint/pens that would work on ceramic tiles??

we have been discussing ideas for toddler group to make for father's day. Had thought of doing hand/foot prints on plain white tiles... Have since realised that ceramic paint is very expensive...

Wishful thinking but is it possible to use any cheaper alternative? Can you varnish over normal paint or will it just come off?

TIA

You will need an oil-based paint if the tiles are glazed which would not be suitable for putting little hands in!

also if you got unglazed presumably you would need a kiln to fire them

yellow moon do ceramic pens. They work on mugs pretty well so should be ok.

(or can you get oven ones?)

actually, you need to put the finished "masterpiece" in the oven with the ceramic pens. So it won't be something they can take away the same day. (I found that out to my cost with the craft bit of ds's birthday last year!)

yeah, I had wondered if they would need to go in a kiln... The tiles we saw (pack in poundland) are glazed...

Think we might just end up making plain cards with handprints instead

Cadbury - sorry x-posted. Might look up the pens. We have the group twice a week so we would do the art on Monday and we can 'cook' them so they'll be ready for the Thursday...

Thanks

I did this with DD.
Mix poster paint with PVA glue - about half and half. It works well enough to make a picture that doesn't crack or peal.
I used laundry markers to write her name and the date on them.
They are purely decorative (could probably be used as a coaster as the PVA should stop the paint from running) but they suited my purpose. One of them was done 16 months ago and still looks just as good as it did the day we did it.

unglazed terracotta is a great surface to paint on. Like the terracotta pots from garden centres. You could put footprints on the flowerpots, varnish over the top, and write some cheesy, hurl-inducingly cute message about "growing bigger every day" or something?
