Cake maker wanting to move onto polymer clay. Any advice

Hi, I’ve been making cakes as a sideline for years and make lots of fondant models. I would really like to make similar models but ones that don’t get eaten 😁 I played around with fimo as a child but just wondered if there is any advice on getting into polymer clay modelling. Recommendations of clay, techniques etc. experience of anyone that has moved on from cake decorating would be interesting, thanks ☺️

Literally everyone I know got into this and identical crafts during covid, they all spent loads on equipment and then were shocked that no one wanted to buy the sometimes pretty but utterly useless items they produced. The market for pretty but useless objects was at its peak in the 70s and mostly died a death in the 90s. As a hobby, sure have fun but don’t expect income from it.

@Darragon thanks for the reply. Not wanting an income for it just how to go about it. Every year I make cupcakes for a charity fundraiser with ponies on them that are modelled to look like peoples actual horses. They sell really well and kids (and some adults) have kept the model off the top for years 😁. I’d like to make the same but without the risk of it going mouldy

I do polymer clay. I’d advise going on Amazon and buying a set like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Artecho-Modeling-Sculpting-Accessories-Beginners/dp/B0CW335DZ4/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?crid=1H1M8WMJSLL5W&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.pnqu2HIQmQRy3D9Q3GUlz1i5Tk5FoqzBYDfRJ35P0K_D22150UW9MI78OZkJ52xipgy7uqwtF5y5oFUdt6nPs9IP3xdMW44jmjoHQBRopp9567E0DrYbK4PaHshdAtU-U5akbTUxFiekBHcu8BiDI2esA-TKZZzZ7VsdkNavArs_7DggphVYucI-MjnIon-fGHP9fp5nZy1bJtB_zP34Bw.QICng9AFLciaOdds9yH-fuQ7u4IhywcLe8mGOEEFXCQ&dib_tag=se&keywords=polymer+clay&qid=1757754040&sprefix=poly%2Caps%2C183&sr=8-4

its perfectly good clay and you get some little tools too. I would recommend getting an acrylic roller and plate too but you might already have something that would work. It’s a great craft to do, loads of tutorials on YouTube . You just bake it in your oven.
