What can I knit with 200g?

JellicleCat · 06/09/2025 19:16

I have 200g of some very lovely 4 play yarn. What can I make that uses this amount? I looked for shawl patterns on Ravelry but they only seem to want 100g and I'd quite like to use all of the yarn. It also needs to be quite easy to knit, I'm not a beginner but have never mastered fancy stiches. Please don't say socks, I get lost turning heels.

Hit me with your ideas please!

What is the yardage? It is much easier to search by meterage.

Look for a shawl that is adjustable in size. There are many patterns for triangular shawls that enable you to just continue knitting until the yarn runs out.

A pattern by the Finnish designer Janina Kallio might be a good choice, most of hers are fairly easy.

Would you be interested in crochet instead?

Squares for knotty and pistey. Look up woolly hugs.

DK & this is 4 ply.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 06/09/2025 22:00

Why not make 2 shawls?

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 06/09/2025 22:02

A long lace scarf works well in 4 ply too.

MyOtherProfile · 07/09/2025 00:47

How about socks? You could get a couple of pairs out of that.

Here’s a Ravelry search for free knitted shawl patterns, 600m - 900m, fingering (= 4ply, normally about 400m = 100g) or light fingering, one colour, v easy up to medium difficulty, to suit an adult and with a photo, sorted with the most popular first.

All that does is take you to the log in page. I don't think you can do a search for someone else, they would need to log into their own account.

Oh, sorry.

There are things you can see on Ravelry without signing in. I hadn’t realised this wasn’t one of them.

SeptemberIRemember · 07/09/2025 11:03

What’s the yarn made from, @JellicleCat ?

If it’s acrylic it wouldn’t be ideal for a very lacy shawl as it wouldn’t block into lacy holes but would good be for a baby blanket which will withstand a lot of machine washing. If it’s wool or cashmere the opposite would apply.

JennieTheZebra · 07/09/2025 11:33

How’s your garment work? If it was me I would make a vest top/cami like this https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/9pm-tank or https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/camisole-no-4 but this does depend on your dress size too as 400m isn’t a great deal of yardage. Alternatively, there’s lots and lots of lovely shawls on Ravelry.

JellicleCat · 07/09/2025 14:58

Thanks for all the suggestions. It's hand dyed merino and I don't know the yardage. It's very soft and bouncy.
I don't think I have enough for a cami, and doubt I would wear a 100% wool cami anyway.
But I've had another look on Ravelry and found some larger shawls, so think that's what I will do.

What shape of shawl do you prefer? I started by knitting semicircular ones, but find crescent-shaped or triangular ones easier to wear.

I think triangle ones are easier to wear too, I think I'm going to go for the Allspice Shawl on Ravelry. Though I will be doing it all in the same yarn, rather than contrasting as in the pattern.
I'm open to other suggestions for similar though.

A lot of Martina Behm's patterns need more than 100g of 4 ply and they tend to be based around garter stitch which makes a lovely shawl with good drape.

Do a matching beanie hat for the shawl!

Or fingerless mitts. That's what I do with leftover yarn bits.

What about a DK weight hat or cowl and hold the yarn double?

(I would also suggest keep trying with socks, they are brilliant and easy once you get going. Watch someone like CrazySockLady on YouTube to figure it out, turning the heel is really just doing a few knit 2 together stitches).
