Has it snapped or just slipped out

DrMadelineMaxwell · 16/08/2025 12:36

That looks like it's slipped out. Pair of pliers to pull it up and out of the fabric?

drspouse · 16/08/2025 12:38

Whether the needle has snapped or just come out...
Raise the presser foot and take the needle out of the fabric. If the fabric won't pull away easily wind the wheel till it does.
Use a no 16 or dedicated jeans needle when you start again.

Can you detach the foot and lift up the needle holder bit (sorry I can’t remember its proper name), then wiggle the needle out? Try pliers if it’s really stuck?

Mrsbloggz · 16/08/2025 12:40

Pliers!
I've had needles snap before but never had one come completely out, I wonder if you had the screw properly tightened?

LIft needle, remove foot, fine nosed needle pliers to pull needle up. That is alot of layers - its the thing at the back to help support whilst sewing through uneven layers?? I would maybe look see if you have a more suitable foot to help but that is alot of layers and maybe why needle struggling (also do you have a new needle? That might be worth doing as well - you are meant to replace frequently and even more so with heavy duty fabrics - you can also get denim specific needles.

When you insert the new needle use the flat head screwdriver that should come with the machine to tighten the screw holding needle in place and make sure needle well seated in its place

It's a proper jeans needle. The thing at the back is a gadget to get over the seams. I just turned it around to support the presser foot while I thought about the problem. Nothing was shifting the needle.

In the end I completely dismantled the bobbin race and the needle came out easily. Not so easy to put the bobbin race back together! Needle wasn't even nicked. I switched to a walking foot and finished the job without any more drama.
