Easy pyjama bottoms pattern

Morning! I used to make some of my own clothes but that was before my son came along and life just took over. 18 years later and I’ve treated myself to a lovely new sewing machine - with great encouragement from my MIL! I’ve managed to shorten 5 pairs of trousers - at 5’1” everything is too long! - but feel it would be nice to make something. Can anyone recommend a simple pattern for pyjama bottoms? I figure they would be a good start or maybe a simple top?

I will probably use my machine mostly for alterations just so I can tweak my current wardrobe or any charity finds but it would be nice to make something from scratch. TIA!

Tilly and the Buttons Jaimie pyjama bottoms are nice and simple, I haven’t made them but really rate their patterns generally.

Hi, I am a beginner at sewing and I recently made the tilly and the buttons pj bottoms. It has a video to watch along on you tube. I found it straightforward apart from the buttonholes!

Yes I came on to say Tilly and the Buttons! One of the first items I ever made 😀.

Congratulations on the new machine!
If you need inspiration search for thrift upcycle on YouTube, there are some very skilled and creative people on there showing what you can do with clothes from the charity shop.
Also, think about bags and pouches... fun to make and you can give them away. I like Sotak Patterns, she has a sale on her patterns every three months or so, and they are well written and usually have a youtube video too.
Enjoy making!

Thanks all. I’ve heard of Tilly and the Buttons so will take a look. I’ve not heard of The Foldline so another one I can look at.

I’ve been looking at YouTube videos generally but good to know about thrift upcycling. It’s amazing what’s online these days!

So another question - where do you tend to source your material from? I will probably be going to the Knitting and Stitching show at Alexandra Palace later in the year but do any of you buy online?

I buy from Rainbow Fabrics quite a bit, they sell deadstock so you need to keep an eye out because they never have a huge amount and the really nice stuff sells out quickly. They are in London in Enfield and Kilburn but I have only ever bought online from them.

Dalston Mills have a reasonable range too, also in London.

The Fold Line is a website that sells patterns from all different companies. It's pretty useful for searching patterns if you know roughly what you are looking for. I always filter on independent designers as I find the traditional ones tricky to follow and a bit dated.

I buy material from my 2 local dressmaking shops as I like to feel fabric before buying. It is expensive though! Sometimes I test a pattern with old bed clothes first and then use my expensive material when I am more confident on the fit, instructions, style etc. Quite often I don't even progress to that step!

Good luck. For me dressmaking is expensive, time consuming and frustrating but addictive and highly satisfying!!

Thanks both. Yes - it’s probably better to be able to feel the material first. Rainbow Fabrics is not a million miles away from me so will definitely check that out.

Also a good point about testing out a pattern first with old material. I guess you have the chance to look at tweaking anything before you go ahead with your own material.

You don’t even need a pattern, just copy from an existing pair of PJs! https://sewverycrafty.com/make-pajama-bottoms-without-a-pattern/

That’s interesting - thanks! Although I don’t own any nice wide PJ bottoms so I’ll need a pattern first.

Thanks for all the tips and advice x
