Just doing my first embroidery project and it’s with one thread - part of the pattern is for a split stitch and I can see from you tube videos that this involves trying to split the thread . I’m wondering if there is a mistake in the instructions and I should use 2 threads for this? Or is it really possible to split one thread - not managed it so far - any tips?

You're definitely meant to split the stitch not use double thread.

What kind of thread are you using? Usually embroidery thread is made up of multiple strands that are twisted together and in the split stich your needle will come out in between the strands. You could try untwisting it slightly to seperate the strands?

I am using DMC thread and there are 6 strands and the embroidery is with one of the six strands . This is the pattern and what I’m aiming for - most of its back stitch but just some of the images are supposed to be split stitch

I looked up the kit. Is it the snowman outline, and maybe the Xmas tree tinsel that is split stitch? Looks like using two strands pulled out from the skein of cotton would be best. If your unsure how to divide your threads from the 6 there's are tutorials on this too.

Tbh most of the pattern would look better using two threads imo. Using one single strand all over would be very dainty looking.

6 strand thread is the norm for splitting for a stitch I think.

Thank you - yes it’s the snowman and Christmas pud that’s supposed to be split - I’ll have a go with two and see how it looks . It is teeny tiny and fiddly so where I have find it with one it looks good . Thanks for your help !

TBH it depends on the thread you are using. A wool strand thread is easier to split than a merchised single cotton thread. Stick-twist threads are normally six strands that can be separated into sections depending on how fine you are doing the work. If you are new to split stitch use two strands and a piece of fabric that does not matter to practice on. Once you have tried it with two try it with one and see if it matches what your working towards.

The RSN has a stitch library that provides a little history behind a stitch and details of how to work it. rsnstitchbank.org/stitch/split-stitch
