Cake Decorating

It is my parents' 50th wedding anniversary this year and I would like to make a cake for them. I am good at baking, and I reckon I could even work out how to get marzipan around the cake and royal icing on top. What I know I cannot do are the decorations on top. Dh has a steadier hand than me and could possibly do the writing. What I want to know is, is it possible to buy little sugar decorations (good ones, of a professional standard) with which to decorate the cake?

Does anyone know anything about this please?

yes DG

do you have a good cake shop near you?

They will have mini flowers and the like made from sugarpaste and fully hardened so all you need to do is stick them on!

were you thinking of doing a tradiotinal cake?

for my grandparents 50th anniversary my aunt made a round cake, marzipanned and white iced. SHe then put a gold ribbon round it, so she didn't have to do anything on the sides! and then wrote on the top in gold icing and added a few flowery bits and it looked ace and really professional

That sounds like the sort of effect I am after Penelope. I do know of a small shop near me which sells cake tins and the like. So you reckon this would be my best bet? It needs to be fool-proof as the one thing I know I cannot do is create works of art.

I thought 50th wedding anniversary would be quite simple though - plain white with gold/yellow decs. Sound right?

yes yellowy cold decs will be fine

nice thick gold ribbon around the cake and then a few bits oon top

will try and find a pic of the one aunt made but was in 1999 before proper good cameras were about!

PenelopePitstops · 24/05/2008 18:10

cake shop sounds fabbo by the way

just go in and have a nosey, whatarea are you in? anywhere hear the midlands and there is one in edgbaston thats ace

DumbledoresGirl · 24/05/2008 18:30

Nope, near Bristol. I went past the shop today (but couldn't park) and they had a sign out saying they did cake decorating (but I can't afford to pay someone to do that and anyway, I want to make this my present for parents) and also that they could advice on designs. Sounds promising doesn't it?

I have a photo of my grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary cake. Long before the days of digital cameras but I thought I could take it in to the shop and ask how easy it is to achieve a similar effect.

If they don't do sugar decorations, does anyone know where else I might be able to get them?

get this book (library will have it - reserve it online if its not at yours). amazing cakes which are surprisingly simple to do, instructions are really clear. they use a lot of fresh flowers which look amazing

chamaeleon · 24/05/2008 18:46

too many amazings, can you tell i really liked it?

Dumbledoresgirl I am crap at links but go to this website www.houseofsugar.co.uk. They have flowers in the easter&flowers section that are yellow or gold. I make Christmas cakes etc and have used these people for the decs for about 10 years. They come on paper and you soak them off, needs a steady hand and I always order 2 lots just in case.
They take about 2 or 3 days to arrive.

DumbledoresGirl · 24/05/2008 19:55

Thanks for those links. I am not sure about the book because I know I cannot make anything, no matter how easy they claim it to be!

The house of sugar link looks a possibility though. The gold poppies would certainly suit.

Thank you for your suggestions. If anyone else has any more, of any nature, I would be grateful.

Try this company: www.apieceofcakethame.co.uk they're a little old fashioned but offer excellent service and have a good selection of ready-made decorations. Alternatively you will find loads on ebay especially in the shops.

kbaby · 24/05/2008 22:41

The cake shop by us will allow you to make your own cake and decorate it and then take it in and they will do the writing for you.
It may be worth checking if the one by you will do that. They also sell letter templates so that you dont have to write freehand.

bratnav, yes I can get to Chipping Sodbury, but I don't really know it. Any idea what the shop is called or where it is in relation to something obvious so I can find it?
