Crochet blanket yarn sub

I would love to make this blanket for my bed in a nice more on the luxury side yarn instead of my usual cheap acrylic. The yarn suggestion is not available, at least not in a wide range of colours from what I can see, in the UK so I need an alternative.
I've attached a screenshot from the downloaded pattern which shows all the yarn info for the one suggested. I thought I might be able to use Yarnsmiths silk and merino but I think that is too thin.
Does anyone have anything they think would be suitable? Many thanks

Your yarn is 32 stitches and 40 rows to a 4”/10cm tension square, so when you’re looking at alternatives, check out how they knit (or crochet) up. I think it’s 3 ply but that may be hard to get in what you’re looking for.

I'm a novice and have absolutely no idea about yarn quality, I just picked ones I liked the look of but if its thickness your after......

I made this blanket with yarn from shien ( coloured ) and home bargains ( grey and white ) it's really heavy ( grey and white are thicker and heavier)

Have a look on the Hobbii website? They have merino, cotton and bamboo which you might prefer?

Any sock yarn should sub easily. But as it's a blanket, tension isn't a huge issue so any 4-ply or light DK will work, you'll just need to swatch to pick your hook size and make any adjustments to repeats.

northernredrose · 27/05/2025 21:51

I couldn’t see a Yarnsmiths merino and silk yarn but I think the Yarnsmiths merino sock yarn would substitute very well. If you do want a thicker blanket (I probably would), you could go for the merino DK. You may need to adapt the pattern/buy more wool though. I’m not sure how much leeway there is.

longtompot · 27/05/2025 22:35

@northernredrose apologies, it was mohair & silk.

I'll have a look at the suggestions, thank you all. I have looked at the yarn sub website @Asparename but nothing seemed close in the colourways the Paton comes in.

@sesquipedalian thank you, I will see what I can find in 3 ply but suspect that will be difficult.

@OhNameHgcaher I am after something a bit more special that my usual to make it a more heirloom type piece. Thank you for your suggestions & your blanket sounds very cosy.

@DeSoleil I really don't want cotton or bamboo as they don't give the look I am after for this blanket. I recently crocheted a runner for our footstool in cotton which was perfect for that.

@Scampuss I think this is what I need really. Any suggestions that have a similar fading effect as the one used in the pattern? I think that the other thing I am struggling to find.

To anyone reading this post now, if you have a sock yarn that offers the sort of fading, graduation variegation the Patons does that's not nylon/acrylic but a more luxury yarn from an indie yarn dyer, I'd be most interested

I've been having a look at other peoples projects of this blanket on Ravelry and I have found this yarn. Has anyone used it, if so what was it like to work with?

Might this give the sort of effect you’re looking for? It’s merino wool, and it’s not cheap….32 stitches to 4 inches, so it should be the same tension as the original yarn - https://woolann.com/products/malabrigo-sock?variant=47318256517456

Sock - 3-ply fingering | Malabrigo

Superwash, 3-ply light fingering yarn in gorgeous colours. Amazingly soft 100% merino.

@sesquipedalian I did see that yarn and thought the same, but don't know how it feels. Have you used it before?

That looks like an all wool version of their Zauberball. I've used Zauberball for socks a few times, which is lovely to work with, and washes well.

@ longtompot -
Sadly I haven’t - I tend to knit for my grandchildren, and although I do use wool or a wool mix, it’s not normally quite that expensive! The colours, t bough, I thought were lovely. Could you risk buying one skein to see if it’s what you want?

longtompot · 28/05/2025 12:18

@sesquipedalian just bought a shank from WW in a colour way that I could turn into a scarf if it's not quite what I want for a blanket.
My original aim with this blanket was buying skeins from places we visited, but when on Skye I couldn't find anything that I liked and was too unwell to really want to go looking all over the place.
Anyway, thank you so much for your help. I know it will be an expensive blanket to make especially as I want it to fit our bed, and I think the pattern is for more of a lap sized one, but I feel it will be worth it.

Very good luck, and I hope it turns out how you want it! Always nice to have a project.

Pashazade · 28/05/2025 13:56

I’ve used schoppel and Malabrigo. Both are good wools. Malabrigo is usually lovely.

longtompot · 28/05/2025 19:16

@Pashazade thank you, that is good to know :)

The Malabrigio is gorgeous yarn, thank you for suggesting it @sesquipedalian but sadly the colour way I chose isn't gradiating in the way I'd like for the project, so it's now being worked into a moss stitch crochet scarf. I'm doing it lengthways instead of short rows across. Hopefully be done in time for winter ;)
However, I do love the sheen & feel of the yarn so will research the colourways a bit more & see if I can see what they look like worked up into socks etc to give me a better idea of what they look like

Sorry it didn’t work out for your project, @longtompot - I know how irritating it is when you have a plan and then the yarn you want is discontinued. There is some of the Kroy socks yarn available on eBay (from the US - £13+ a ball) but the colours are obviously limited, and also some that is a little more reasonably priced on Etsy. I do hope you manage to find what you’re looking for!
