Crochet Gift Ideas

My dear friend is very good at crocheting and makes lots of soft toys, flowers as well as clothes etc. I am very new to crochet so am clueless.

What would be a nice gift to give for a birthday? Or would I be best avoiding that theme altogether.

Thanks!

My sister gave me a year’s subscription to Simply Crochet magazine which I appreciated.

Personally (I crochet) neither a book nor a subscription would be my thing.

Unless you know of something specific your friend would like, I think you're better off avoiding it. Once you're not a beginner, you have your tools & yarn you prefer & if there is a took/book/ whatever you want, what you want is pretty specific. So chances are a gift will go to waste or be regifted. Unless you can wheedle out of your friend something specific she's after. You could innocently ask if she has a yarn bowl, what she thinks of them or crochet hooks which have lights...

There are some lovely personalised crochet hooks and bags to keep crochet hooks and wool on Etsy.

A voucher for wool warehouse or a local yarn shop? I crochet and wouldn't need more hooks or books.

cadburygorilla · 26/05/2025 19:22

I’m a crocheter and there’s never enough wool to be had! If she likes making wareables, get 500 grams worth; if she likes making toys or smaller ones, get a variety of different colours, perhaps in cotton

I crochet and have never heard of crochet hooks with lights. I use a neck lamp for cross stitch. I'd be interested in these light hooks, but only for my typical hook size, 4 and 5.

There's also these thread/yarn cutters, they're like a keyring with no exposed blades. They're good if you fly a lot (allowed on planes) or have young kids.

That’s definitely the safest option. I’ve had yarn as a present before & loved it, but it was from the woman who taught me & who knew what I’d like.

Someone bought me a kit once & while it was a kind thought I’ve still not got round to making it.

NerdyBird · 26/05/2025 19:47

Dsd bought me a bowl that you put the yarn in and it's got a sort of cut out you pull the end through so keeps it all tidy.

I think that’s lovely.

I’m a crocheter and would love this

This. I've had all the hooks, books and accessories I could wish for, and plenty more I wouldn't wish for. We all have our favourite hooks - I would never use a personalised fancy one, or one with lights or whatever.

I think you really can't go wrong with a voucher. Do you have a nice yarn shop near you where you could get a voucher?

I have a weakness for pretty but practical stitch markers and counters.

This is the best counter I have.

And these stitch markers. I've also got the set numbered 0-9. Very useful for large items or complicated counting. I have several different sets of pretty stitch markers from this company.

Currently I have my eye on this blocker.

Thanks for all your replies and input. Exactly the advice I was looking for. We have a lovely independent wool/craft shop in town so I am going to see if they do vouchers. I've noted down the other ideas too and will have a think.

Thanks again everyone.

You can find the crochet hook sets with lights on Amazon

A subscription to Inside Crochet would be another possibility.
