safe ink - or anything else? - for baby foot and handprints?

I found a kit on ebay but it's exorbitant, given that it seems to be a one-use thing, with an 'inkless wipe' whatever that is! I'd like lots of prints - for birthday cards, scrapbook, adoring grannies, etc. Has anyone come across a safe way of doing this without buying a kit that gives you enough for one set of prints?

When I was one, my mum dipped my hand in Virol (malty stuff - can you even get it any more??) to make a safe print for my dad's birthday card. Is there anything else that might work like that? Mind you, he's only 11 weeks, so not on solids! :-)

Have to be honest, used non toxic poster paint for dd 1 and 2 did one set dunked straight into water to wash off then bath. Then scanned copies into computer. I Feel all the posh inks etc are a bit like the emperors new clothes it's all still chemical on the skin and poster paint is designed for children and to be a non toxic as possible.

I now have the originals framed on the wall

Virol! Ohh I am so glad you reminded me of the name of that stuff. i have spent years tryign to remember it. My Aunt used to dip my dummy in it when my mum wasn't looking!

I'd just use paint or ink and not worry too much. Is not like using mercury or something.

Oh yes normal paint. It said it was washable so figured he wouldn't end up with permanently blue hands. Don't waste your money, whether its 'safe' or not you're going to try to stop them from putting their hands with paint on in their mouths aren't you?

Even easier than paint, a non toxic child friendly ink pad. I got one from hobbycraft and it did the job brilliantly.

Thanks! I realised that I was automatically looking for an ultra safe product for a procedure that can't possibly hurt my baby in any case! I ended up using one of my rubber stamping ink pads - it said non toxic - and wiping off with a Wet One. Result=beautiful prints on his grandad's card!
