Raglan sweater help

I was just wondering if someone could help me out please? I’ve got myself very confused about this pattern. I’m doing the medium sized sweater, the measurements after the ( but I’ve added an extra 4 inches to the length so that it fits my husband. So I’ve knitted to 19inches instead of 15 inches for the back piece.
I’m knitting the front piece now and where it says to knit until the piece measures 22 inches, I presume I’ll have to knit to 26 inches to add in the extra 4 inches. But I’m confused as to where I’ll be in the pattern at that point. Will I have completed the raglan sleeve shaping and just have the neck shaping to do? Otherwise it feels as though the front will be too long? Ahhh

raglan shaping starts before the neck, you do armhole shaping for the front as the back .and add in the neck shaping at the point that includes the extra inchesadded to body. So for a period you will be doing neck and raglan shaping at the same time. Generally at the neck the work splits in 2 and you leave one half on a stitch holder complete the other half and then complete the side on the switch holder.
It's a badly written pattern and confusing for a newbie. Lots of patterns are written badly nowadays.

@BusyExpert thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I’m hoping by the time I get to the neck bit, it’ll be a bit clearer because I’ll be able to see what I’m doing. I need to find somewhere where I can read the pattern before I buy it, you think you’re buying a straightforward pattern and then when you buy it and read it, it’s puzzling! 🙄
All I wanted was a simple raglan pattern and it was so hard to find anything!
Thank you again :)

a pleasure. I have been knitting all of my life and I am pretty good at it but even I have to puzzle it out sometimes.

have you heard of the website "Ravelry" it is a treasure trove of patterns from all over the world. You can search by a characteristic, style age etc

UnaPeacock · 01/03/2025 10:33

@BusyExpert yes I’ve had a look on Ravelry as well. I get a bit overwhelmed with all the choice on all the different platforms to be honest 🤣 I’m a bit of an over thinker too which doesn’t help. I just need to chill out a bit 🙂

You need a knitting support group, knitting is supposed to be mindful!

feel free to DM me if you are stuck...

@BusyExpert thank you :) I have easy/patterns I’ve done before for relaxing and then I try and challenge myself with something new every so often as well :) thank you for being so kind

@BusyExpert just thought you’d like to see the ‘finished’ sweater. I’ve got to do the rib neck but it’s nearly there. I had a bit of break from it to finish something else :)
the pattern was just written badly I think so I had to tweak it a bit bit I’m pretty pleased and it fits my husband and the colour is lovely :)

that is lovely! Did you block it? your stocking stitch is very even.
I am currently making a jacket for myself in that colour. However it's in moss stitch which is a bit tedious.....

UnaPeacock · 25/04/2025 21:10

@BusyExpert thank you. I’m pretty proud. Yep I blocked it and thankfully that made it a little looser so that it fit properly. I’ve just got to figure out how to get a neat ribbed neck on there now. I had a go today but it was a bit floppy, think I picked up too many stitches because I wasn’t concentrating. I love the look of moss stitch :)

Are you using a smaller needle for the neckline? Maybe try going 0.5mm smaller than you’ve been using if it looks floppy/creates gapping around the neck. Perhaps you already are, but you could also try using a circular needle for the neckline and knitting the ribbing all in one piece, I find that often gives a less floppy look (and I’m too lazy to sew seams 😆). It looks fab!

UnaPeacock · 26/04/2025 09:49

I’ve got some smaller circular needles to do the collar. I think I just mis counted the stitches and it ended up looking like a Tudor frill 🤣 I’ll try again today
