I am looking for good quality sewing machine needles. Could anyone recommend any websites. Thank you.

I usually just get them from Amazon as they all seem much the same - usually a mixed gauge pack to cope with different material weights

What is the brand of your machine OP? I have used generic needles but often use Janome needles in my Janome machine, Singers in my Singer...

The main thing is the right type of needle for the job. Having a leather needle to hand is pretty useful for really tough projects, a ballpoint is essential for jersey knit fabrics

I appreciate the replies. Jones machine.

I always use schmetz needles. I’m afraid I’d never buy from Amazon, too many fakes available.

you can buy needles from all sorts of places: cotton patch.co.uk Minerva.com hobbycraft or John Lewis would have them.

Second try to avoid Amazon. There are good dedicated sewing suppliers online - try Jaycotts for your needles. Or if you have a local sewing machine shop they will have needles and be able to help advise which are best. Enjoy your sewing!

Sorry - you asked for online!!

Ball point needles are excellent for polar fleece fabrics too.

My machine is a Brother and I tend to use a variety of Schmetz needles which I buy from Ebay.

I use Schmetz needles as they are good quality and reasonably priced. In my coverstitch I use Organ needles as that’s what came with it. I’m quite impressed with Organ and would definitely buy them in the future for my sewing machine. I don’t buy Singer needles as I read that they were slightly longer than Schmetz but they’d probably be fine as well

WildCherryBlossom · 21/02/2025 08:29

Agree Schmetz are good. There isn't a huge price difference in needles really. You'll be fine with Hemline or Prym etc - whatever your chosen online supplier sticks. if you have to buy online, then the postage price might be the biggest differentiator. I would probably get several packs and / or bundle in with some other sewing supplies from somewhere like Minerva (which stocks pretty much everything you can imagine). If you can't get to a local shop, don't forget to put plenty of thread in your online shopping basket too. Lots of the online retailers will offer to colour match thread to fabric you buy from them. I'm always surprised how much thread I get through (and how expensive it is these days)

Am very curious about your machine, OP. I don't think Jones have been made in a long time? Is it vintage? Sorry to be nosy, but I love vintage sewing machines.

LauraFaye88 · 22/02/2025 08:29

Thanks for all this advice. My delivery from Jaycotts is coming today.I bought 5 packets of needles.I paid 2-20 for delivery as I didn't want to spend £25 to get free shipping without seeing the standard/quality of the service.I will next time if all is good.
My Jones machine belonged to my husband's ex.I have been with him 33 years.I absolutely love it.It was even used by my daughter in the caravan to make masks for villagers during COVID.Sadly I didn't inherit my mum's hand operated Singer, which I loved.

You won’t have a problem with Jaycotts. I discovered after ordering and paying postage that they are based very near me and I bought my overlocker from them. Incredibly helpful and knowledgeable staff.

TorturedParentsDepartment · 28/02/2025 09:17

I'll be honest - I have a vintage Singer and I just use whatever needles are to hand on my machine and haven't had any problems (I'm not gentle on sewing machine needles - which got me into endless bother with my Textiles teacher when I was at school).
