Where online to buy really nice clothing fabrics

I'm thinking of making some clothes. I love sewing and I have a fashion design background but I'm finding it hard to know where sells really nice fabrics online. I don't have anywhere local unfortunately. Any suggestions would be very welcome.

What type of fabric? Knit or woven? Weight and price point?

When I’ve bought online it’s been from Croft Mill, which has a massive range of clothing fabric. They do send out samples too so it de-risks online buying,

Abakhan is worth a look, reasonably priced and a good range of different fabrics. Pricier but worth a look for dead stock designer fabrics, try fabricgodmother. They have a sale on at the moment. NB - their fabric is sold by the half-metre.

Really nice fabrics often come with a hefty price tag. If you don’t mind spending a bit, look for brands such as Merchant and Mills, Atelier Brunette, Mind the Maker and Meet MILK. Those are brands I personally have worked with, but I’m sure there are other quality brands out there.

If you don’t want to spend that much, look for deadstock fabrics. Abakhan is good for this (especially in store) as is Croftmill and Dalston Mill (occasionally).

I get a lot of my fabric from Minerva, just because they sell pretty much everything, from basic to luxury. Guthrie and Ghani are great too for a more “curated” selection of quality fabrics

Probably more woven fabrics. A wide price range and fabrics ideally as I think this will give me ideas of what to make.

I used to buy from the Cloth House in London when I was a student and made my own clothes but I don't live in London anymore.

A lot of online fabric stops seem to have loads of crazy printed cottons which is not me.

I've just had a look at Croft Mill, lovely fabrics, that's just the sort of shop I'm looking for. Thank you

I like Minerva, fabric godmother, Higgs and Higgs, cloth house have a website. Dragonfly fabrics.

Joel and sons for luxury headstock, stitch fabrics has a wide, ever changing range.

sometimes I have a look at the sellers of stitching fairs at places like Alexandra Palace. There’s always a few I’ve not heard of.

I like Northern Monkey Makes. They have a good, all round selection. Great for stretch fabrics, and thicker knits too. Whilst a lot of their stuff does have the patterning that you don't like, the do have a large range of plain fabrics, in a wide range of colours. They also have a great haberdashery and they are a family run business. Customer service is excellent.

If I'm feeling fancy, then Misan always has something interesting. And of course, Liberty, their cotton lawn is second to none.

One of the more recent innovations is stretch thread. Check out Maraflex and Seraflex. No more popped stitches and its great for stretch fabrics too as you can now sew straight stitch rather than zigzag or lightning.

Thanks everyone, some lovely shops suggested and a really good place to start. I'm looking forward to making again

You’ve inspired me, too - I’ve got two garments cut out which I haven’t picked up for ages, but I’m going to get my machines out for a couple of hours this afternoon!
