Are they reliable? Easy to service etc?

Any thoughts welcome!

i am totally flumuxed myself by choosing a new machine, lets think logically, there is,

singer - i don't know much about this brand, but obviously they have been around for years, both my mum and grandma had a singer.

brother, jamone, pfaff - again don't know much about these, but i have spotted quite a few janome machines on craft blogs

husqvarna - i have their cheaper option, a huskystar which i've had since college, its 18 years old and needs to retire, but it has done me proud

bernina - now, my gut instinct is to go for one of these, but they are expensive, basic model is around £500. the bernette range is cheaper but i have read that they are not actually manufactured by bernina just marketed by them, so will not be of the same standard

are you after one with lots of pre programmed decorative stitches?, might help to make a list of the jobs you would like it to do. i'm after,

basic sewing (inc buttonholes)
free machining (embroidery)
quilting (i've heard the thing to have is a 'walking foot')
but am intrigued by the idea of designing an image on the computer and being able to load it into the sewing machine and it sew it for me, but i think these are referred to as embroidery machines rather than sewing machines, it probably costs way to much to get something that does both.

i've just waffled haven't i!

Not at all, that's really helpful lucykate!

I'm after all the things you are after, bar perhaps the quilting (I could live without that) and not too worried about the embroidery (though I'm sure I would use it if I had it!). Budget is up to £100 so Bernina is well out of the question unfortunately.

I've noticed janome come up on a lot of blogs too, how funny . I've got a brother atm but the tension is shot - it was my granny's, it must be at least thirty years old

Anyone else? (I'm really asking at the wrong time aren't I, who wants to talk about sewing machines at 11.30 on a Friday night )

here I would recommend a Bernina, they are fab!!!

lucykate · 02/05/2008 23:50

the bernina 1008 is the one i used at college, on my degree course we struggled to get time on them, it was an embroidery degree with 12 students and only 4 machines which is why i bought my huskystar, i chose it as it was the cheapest i could find that dropped the feeder teeth down so you could do freehand embroidery, i think i paid £150 for it

Miaou · 02/05/2008 23:50

I saw that minky, but bernina is far too expensive, have only got £100 to spend

miaou, this might shed some light on the different brands, in a giveaway post a while ago, i asked people to tell me what machine they use when they left a comment,

here

Miaou · 02/05/2008 23:57

ooooh thanks! Will have a read.

have just read through the comments, it seems, brother is not recommended but janome and husqvarna thought of highly

MinkyBorage · 02/05/2008 23:57

sorry, didn't see tht bit

Miaou · 03/05/2008 00:02

Argh, I am none the wiser! Except that janome gets a good press. I think I might throw my lot in with this Singer I'm looking at. If nothing else I can test-drive it for you lucykate

All I can say is don't get a 'New Home' 'tis what I have. Very servicable. Doesn't 'do' embroidery. And no-one has ever heard of them so servicing is a bit of a nightmare parts wise (luckily I have a good sewing machine fella).
I've always heard good things about janome

Nbg · 03/05/2008 08:45

I cant really help you but all I can say is that I have Janome.

It was my mums. She got it before she had me so its at least 26 years old.
Never been serviced and its still going. So it must be good

lucykate · 03/05/2008 08:48

mu huskystar has never been serviced either

dizzyday07 · 03/05/2008 09:56

I've got a Brother

It does all I need it to do but I'd really like to get one that I can frop the feed dogs on - and one that could do embroidery too would be nice

Miaou · 03/05/2008 10:48

Well, I won a Singer on ebay this morning - so we'll see how good it is now LOL! Will let you know what I think - I will be the guinea pig
