Large plastic storage boxes for craft items

I want to store fabrics & other craft materials in fairly large, lidded plastic boxes, but I'm having trouble finding/ buying them. Any suggestions?

I bought some from a DIY store but they have a strong rubbery smell to them. I got a couple to see if the smell went away, but it hasn't so they've been relegated to the garage now.

I saw some reviews saying Really Useful boxes are good - is that so?

Definitely really useful boxes, Homebase always has a great selection

Dunelm have what you are looking for, all sorts of sizes with lids and no smell.

I like Wham boxes. They stack well and come in lots of sizes.

My OH swears by Really Useful boxes, which come in a whole range of sizes.
He got his from Staples, the office suppliers.

My only gripe with them is that they don't stack inside each other, so take up as much room if they are empty as when they are full.

Hi,
I highly recommend the Really Useful Boxes. I have most sizes and use them for everything including wild bird food, craft materials, suspension files, seasonal decor and DIY materials. Easy to spot what's in them without removing the lids. No need to label them 《unless you want to》. The lid lock is secured with two plastic clips.

Great prices online at Viking Direct and delivered to door. Their bundle/bulk buys are great and often cheaper than buying individually.

The range includes some that are nestable (stack inside each other) or stackable. I have both but they're seldom empty so are all stacked.

You can get wheels for a couple of sizes of really useful boxes too.
Makes them easier to move around the house (and hide your fabric stash when you have guests....)

I love the really useful boxes for fabric. I've got some dunelm ones too, which are good but can crack.

The small wham boxes are great for small items, and sit on top of each other.

I also like these for paper craft, sewing stuff. I've had them for at least 8 years and they last so well. https://www.amazon.co.uk/WestonBoxes-A4-Plastic-Storage-Boxes/dp/B005ARVCPU/ref=asc_df_B005ARVCPU?mcid=59585686b6303b2992b4cfb8c21fa327&tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=697365887495&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=15176141688238084624&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9045402&hvtargid=pla-296366737140&psc=1&gad_source=1

Sorry for the crap link!

I've got laminated labels which are attached with velcro. So I can change the box labels when they change use!

They even have business sized one, and the some for sticker sheets.

Homebase has gone into administration and is closing down.

IKEA boxes are good for general sizes, although don't have closure clips. Different sizes stack on top of each other.

P00hsticks · 01/01/2025 22:11

B&M also has a good range of Really Useful /boxes - although in our local one they tend to display them on the top shelf of many of the aisles rather just than in one place....

This was pre-covid, but I bought alot of clear, plastic crates with lids from both ASDA and Argos in various sizes.

We cleared only them out of a garage this week and were pleased how well they've lasted. Can't recall any strong smells.

Luddite26 · 01/01/2025 22:51

Id just go for really useful boxes they are stronger and less likely to crack.

TorturedParentsDepartment · 03/01/2025 15:22

Generally get them all from the same store so they actually stack and all have the same lid or you end up with the large scale version of the Tupperware cupboard of shame. Think mine tend to come from Poundstretcher just as it's the nearest place for us.

Thanks again for all the advice. So many people have said Really Useful that that's what we're checking out now. This page has size comparisons:

so we just need to work out what will go inside & what goes through the hatch to the loft!

I really appreciate getting so many informative replies.❤

Are the Really Useful ones gnaw resistant? I want to put them in the shed but we get visitors with teeth out there!
