I took an evening class December 05. I had PND and made myself get out of the house.
I loved it and have practised at home ever since.
My new years resolutiong this year was to set myself a goal/deadline that didn't involve being a mummy. So i entered an exhibition and will be handing it over to the gallery tomorrow.

what sort of mosaic do you want to do at your workshop? how much time will you have?

Buddhababe · 29/04/2008 20:12

well good for you! I wish you the best of luck with the exhibition.

As for what type of Mosaic I want to do, i have no idea as I have never done it before. I was hoping to get more insight after the doing the 6 week course. Can you recommend any good websites to read up regarding background information?

try
inspired mosaics
and
mosaic matters
there are a lot of good books around that are good for inspiration, you could try the library.

for the six week course stick to something simple, like a small picture or mirror. also geometric patterns are trickier than they look and need lots of planning.

thanks for that!

How long have you been working on that one dragonbutter? Looks amazing. What base are you using?

I think you should give it a try Buda. I'd never thought of doing mosaics but you could make some lovely things.

I started it in January and finished it this week. So four months. But I only get time on the evenings and weekends to do it. I didn't get much done in the evenings though as i'm usually too tired, but DH has taken the kids out for a few hours every weekend to let me get on with it (in exchange for him to get out on his bike). I'm not sure when DH and I actually spent time together on the weekend so this weekend should be nice.

The main base is a thick plywood, the waves and trees are actually on a seperate piece of MDF which DH cut and glued onto the backboard. My idea was to give a more 3D look than you usually get with mosaic. We tried cutting it out of plywood but it splintered badly so had to go for MDF in the end.

Any other mosaicing mumsnetters out there?

Hi buddhababe

beware of starting mosaics it can be addictive

Dragonbutter - Hi i'm, a mn mosaicer. I have been mosaicing for 9 years. I run an art retreat and also teach mosaics and other art classes. Your work is very, very good. Congratulations. I love mosaics, there are just so many different materials you can use. I work in ceramic, crockery, glass and I'm about to do some pebble mosaics.

I've done a few day couses with Oliver Budd with groups of friends and they were fab.

Although I haven't done much at home since, but they were a great basic course.

Thank You Yuki
What's everybody working on at the moment.
I'm about to start a house sign commissioned by my Aunt-in-law.

Filthymindedvixen - What is you want to make? is it for indoors or outdoors? do you want to use mosaic tiles or ordinary household tiles?

I would definitely suggest drawing your design onto the wood first, you'll get much nicer shapes that way. I usually draw or print mine onto paper first then you can use carbon paper to transfer the design onto your wood.
