Hey crafters.

I’m new to knitting and in need of advice / support. I’ve got the stitches sorted but I am really struggling to problem solve! I’ve got this far with knitting tutorials but sometimes I don’t know what to search for.

currently making this - https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/step-by-step-sweater

Ive messed up my ribbing doing k1 p1 and I’ve attempted to unpick but my stitch on the left needle doesn’t look ready for a knit stitch, any tips? Apologies for the rubbish photo.

also messed up my join and it’s so messy!! Added an extra stitch and need to neaten so any tips on that also appreciated 🤦🏻‍♀️ yes likely out of my depth!

Hi, sorry I can't help with the ribbing, but I wanted to recommend this video,

Knit your FIRST SWEATER (top down, in the round, no seaming!)

It is a very similar pattern and might help you out if you get stuck later on.

The stitch on your left needle looks to me if it's twisted the wrong way. Thats why it doesnt look right. Fix this by knitting into the back of it. Or you can turn the stitch round and knit it in the normal way.

Sometimes you get an extra stitch by accidentally putting the yarn over the needle and then knitting it, which leaves a hole too. It's how you make holes on purpose for eyelet patterns. Looks like that might have happened at your join.
I still do it by mistake sometimes when working 4 needles.

If you are unpicking you might be quicker to just start again as you are near the beginning, I know this is depressing! Or just pull the work off the needles and pull back to the mistake, then pick up all the stitches again. You often end up with some the wrong way as above but you can correct that by working into the back or adjusting them in the first row.

Also you can check your cast in is loose enough to go over your head (had bad experience with this!)

The best way to learn is to make mistakes , try to figure out what you have done then ask for advice and then try that. It is okay to make mistakes! Be patient with yourself because you are trying!!!
If you get too frustrated just start over or set it aside till another day!

In your first picture, the stitch on your left needle does look ready for a knit stitch to me (as long as you move your working yarn behind your right needle first - it's in front as though you were about to do a purl stitch.

Btw, do you know about lifelines in knitting? Get a length of spare yarn in a different colour, thread it onto a darning needle, then thread it through all of the stitches currently on your needle and leave it there (take the darning needle off). It only takes a minute. Now if you make a mistake in the next few rows, you can just take your needles out, rip back to where you left the lifeline, then re-insert your needle into the row of stitches that the lifeline is running through. Move your lifeline up as you progress through your project, so that if you make a mistake, you only have to pull back a few rows.

I'm an experienced knitter, but I'm rubbish at correcting mistakes in my knitting. The lifeline has saved me a few times!

Thanks so much everyone! Going to read through and have another go again today.
I unpicked and restarted twice before seeing the thread and had the same issue again with the joining in the round 😂
I’ll no doubt be back with more questions - thanks all!

Well good for you OP! It sounds like you have the gumption to get past this ! Joining in the round is actually something that takes time and practice to achieve so don't be too hard on yourself.

It would help you to use a stitch marker at the beginning of each new row which you carry onto the next one. Happy knitting!

I got there! Looking forward to starting the next part of the pattern. Appreciate all of the tips to date.

It 's looking good @Greybeard6 ! Definitely improving your stitches already. And that looks like a very nice join.
Isn't knitting satisfying 🤗 ? (when it isn't frustrating!) 😤
