Crochet for lefthanders

I'm going to be teaching my niece to crochet and she's left handed, whilst I'm right handed.
This may be a really stupid question, but do lefties crochet in the opposite way (ie a mirror image of the right handed stitch, with the hook in her left hand)? Or should I teach her with the crochet hook in her right hand? I'm not sure how ambidextrous she is.

If the hook is in the left hand, does that mean you have to change anything, or is the pattern exactly the same, just worked in the opposite direction?

Apologies for the daft questions but I'd really like to get it right for her.

Hi ☺️
I'm left handed but I taught myself to crochet last year and decided to do it right handed. I do a lot of things with my right hand (use scissors, for example) so it didn't really make it any harder for me. The benefit is then that I found it easier to learn using online tutorials etc.
I'm sure someone will be along who actually does crochet left handed to give more info!

Edit: sorry, yes, left handed would be to hold the hook in your left hand and crochet left to right! I'm not sure how often this causes pattern confusion as I don't do it myself!

I'm left handed and hold the hook in my left and end up with the pattern running back to front.

I'm left handed and I just can't do it at all. But hopefully your neice will have more success, I think it's my brain not my hands that's the problem. Grin

Thanks everyone. I may get her to try right handed, see if she can do it. She's used right handed scissors upside down for years so she may well work it out herself!

I'm left handed but crochet right handed.
Many of us 'lefties' are actually quite good with our right hands, but for me some things definitely feel more comfortable using one hand or another, so se how she feels. If she does want to hold the hook in her left hand, then it might be helpful to sit facing her so that it would be like looking in a mirror.

Ah thanks! I was thinking I'd use a mirror but opposite makes perfect sense.

Sarah-Jayne at Bella Coco Crochet does videos for left handed versions of some of her patterns if that helps https://www.youtube.com/@bellacococrochet/videos

She has a fairly recent video for a basic blanket.

I crochet left handed, I learnt from the bella coco left handed YouTube videos. I follow patterns just fine. If I need to watch a YouTube for help, I use a mirror and watch the reflection of the tutorial.
If you sit opposite her, she can just mirror image you.
I've never had a problem following patterns. There was one, when I first started crocheting, that specifically said in the instructions 'can not be done left-handed' - it didn't stop me though and came out just as it was supposed to anyway Grin

Brilliant, thank you! I'm reassured that we'll be able to work it out now.

Don’t try and teach her right handed , it will be uncomfortable and she will give up . Sit opposite her you doing it with a larger hook and chunkier yarn will help her to see what you are doing. When I crochet in a row I do it left to right ie the opposite way ; when I crochet in a circle I do it clockwise ie the other way . My projects look like anyone else’s doing it right handed .

Thanks. I'm going to do exactly that. She wants a granny square blanket so she'll be able to get a good result, whichever way she does it.
