Can someone simplify this please, I’m confused as to why I’m ending up with less stitches than I should !

Next row: K2, sl1, k1, psso, knit to last 4 sts, k2tog, k2.
Next row: P2, p2tog, purl to last 4 sts, p2togtbl, p2. 45 [57:67:71:73:75:79] sts.
These 2 rows set armhole shaping.
Dec 1 st as set at each end of next 1 [1:3:3:3:3:3] rows,
then on 2 foll RS rows. 39 [51:57:61:63:65:69] sts.

So you're decreasing two stitches on the right side row and then two on the wrong side row as well. After repeating these decreases either one or 3 more times, depending on which size you're doing, you end with 4 rows where you only do the decreases on the right side rows. Assuming you have 3 further decreases to do:

row 1 - RS - 2 decreases
row 2 - WS - 2 decreases
row 3 - RS - 2 decreases
row 4 - WS - 2 decreases
row 5 - RS - 2 decreases
row 6 - WS - 0 decreases
row 7 - RS - 2 decreases
row 8 - WS - 0 decreases
row 9 - RS - 2 decreases
row 10 - WS - 0 decreases

A total of 14 decreases, but the first stitch count is at the end of row 2, when you've already decreased 4 stitches. After that you decrease a further 10.

It could be written in a clearer way, but as I understand it:
On each decrease row you go down by 2 stitches.

Next few rows (for all but the 2 smallest sizes)
Decrease 1 stitch at each end of next 3 rows
1 RS - decrease
2 WS - decrease
3 RS - decrease
Decrease on 2 following RS rows
4 WS - do not decrease
5 RS - decrease
6 WS - do not decrease
7 RS - decrease

You’ve decreased 2 stitches on each of 5 rows, so 10 stitches. For example, the largest size has gone from 79 to 69 stitches.

How many fewer stitches do you have than you should have?

i see @tribpot is quicker than I am.

I’m not sure whether I am knitting in st st or following the set pattern - Row 1, Row 2
because I am loosing 2 stitches per row within the ‘set’ plus the 2 stitches on each end which results in me having less stitches overall

Im working with the 3 size

You are not losing the 2 stitches per set and two at either end. You should only be decreasing within the set. The two other end is why you are losing too many stirches
