Is there anywhere good for fabric shops like Berwick Street used to be?

I recently visited Berwick Street in London hoping to find lots of fabulous fabric shops. Sadly they’ve almost all gone, I only found two and one of them was nothing special. Is there anywhere else I could try? I’m in East Anglia but can travel. Or just any really fantastic fabric shop recommendations.

Liberty in Regent street is probably the best but as I’m sure you know, not exactly cheap.

John Lewis in Cambridge has a reasonable selection.

Joel & Sons near Edgware Road

Yeah, I was going to say John Lewis is about the best these days - I've bought fabric in the one in Kingston a few times. There used to be a huge fabric shop in Tooting/South Wimbledon, but I can't for the life of me remember exactly where or what it was called so can't even try figure it out to see if it's there still.

Depending on what yoyu need it for, Hobbycraft has a surprisingly good seletion but it is more leaning towards the crafty side. Lots of satin though at the Wimbledon one! Grin

I just had the most wonderful trip to Goldhawk Road, must have been 20 fabric shops

bumblebee1000 · 05/11/2024 14:24

Ridley road has a few....walthamstow high st has lots but only 2 good ones out of about 10.

LemonVerbeena · 05/11/2024 14:26

Definitely Goldhawk Road!

Shepherd's bush market / gold hawk road
Upton park /green street
Tooting market
Southall main high st

There are a few more fabric shops in Soho, if you Google. Broadwick Silks, Silk Society, Berwick St Cloth shop have all moved to Wembley. There is also Cloth House in Camden and Shaukat & Co on Old Brompton Street (they usually have discounted Liberty fabrics). Petticoat Lane/Brick Lane has quite a few fabric shops.

John Lewis has nothing. A Liberty print stand, some lining fabric and that’s about it.

Edgware Road has some excellent expensive fabric shops, Jason’s is one.

i did an exhaustive hunt when I was making my wedding dress, and wanted to go somewhere more ‘exclusive/fancy’ than Shepherd’s Bush, where I frequently by silks and wools.

I trawled all over the place
but I ended up buying a beautiful heavy weight silk crepe for much less than I wanted to spend at one of my regular haunts in Shepherd’s Bush.

I know live in east London and go to woolcrest for interesting ends of lines

and Walthamstow for African waxes, batiks, beaded and embellished fabrics, and broderie anglais.
plus endless £1/2/3/4pm curiosities and basics.

Oh wow! Thank you all. Looks like another trip to London for me, loads of areas to visit.

Burwash manor has a nice one. Just outside of Cambridge. So not the biggest but perhaps easier to get to.

If you want to splash a lot of cash Jason's and Joel&Sons on Edgware Road.

For a more sensible trip Goldhawk Road. If you are taking a car, there is absolutely no parking so you need to find a space on Just Park or similar. And allow a lot of time, there are a lot of shops.

WannabeMathematician · 05/11/2024 15:17

Also. You could make a weekend of it. Go to Paris on the train. Go to Monmatmartre and go coupon shopping. I got 3.5m of wool for €30. Silks were more expensive but paid for the trip in the savings.

I just remembered another one in Soho:

If you are going to shops in Soho or Liberty/JL or Edgware Road, I would recommend a visit to V V Rouleaux in Marylebone Lane for a browse too. They are a treasure trove of ribbons, braids, lace, fabric flowers and other trimmings/millinery supplies.

MacCulloch & Wallis

Shop online for dress fabrics, haberdashery, trimmings, millinery, tailoring and corsetry supplies from a long established London store.

Hop on a plane and go to the US, so many awesome fabric shops! The Uk seems to be getting a bit better, but still not a patch on the US, OZ or NZ!

Another vote for Goldhawk Road - it’s the last stop on the Hammersmith and City Line.
The other brilliant place is Rosenberg and Son in Walthamstow. I think you need to make an appointment to access the show room as they do a lot of craft shows and fairs but they have some fabulous fabrics and are brilliantly helpful.

Laalaalaand · 05/11/2024 16:58

Definitely goldhawk road. There's a particular one who is very cheap right near the goldhawk road station opposite tesco express - he has some quite nice stuff,. Some shops have some quite expensive beautiful bridal fabrics and the whole street has everything in between. I quite like one i think called Misan - they've got a reduced section upstairs with some bargains to be had. If you're taking the train, take a little wheely suitcase.

TeamPolin · 05/11/2024 17:11

Whereabouts in East Anglia are you Op. Franklins in Colchester is excellent and I think they have an Ipswich branch too. They also service sewing machines.

winterdarkness · 05/11/2024 18:45

Fashion Street area in east London or Goldhawk Road

Does Walthamstow market still exist? There used to be several good value brick-and mortar shops as well as fabric market stalls on market day. I’m still using the zips I stocked up on for 10p each! Easy to reach by train from Cambridge, if you’re in that part of East Anglia.

There’s a company, I think it is the same Rosenbergs, who travel to do occasional fabric sales in Trumpington Village Hall. The next one is on 27 November.

I wouldn’t make a special journey to John Lewis Cambridge to buy dress fabrics, there seems to be less there whenever I go in. Sew Knit Create on King Street has a reasonable selection of quilting fabrics. The little fabric shop next to The Arts in Cambridge has closed.

Aparecium · 05/11/2024 19:08

Lady Sew and Sew in Henley. Mostly mail order, with frequent warehouse open days, exhibitions and courses. Weighted towards patchwork fabrics, but expanding their dressmaking section, too.

I feel like a child in a sweetshop in there!

Worth making a day, or even a weekend, of it, as Henley is a nice place to visit.

The market is now very poor compared to over 20 years ago...it mostly finishes at the sainsburys now....there are about 10 fabric shops...only 2 good ones...Saeds and another one just before that....the others are full of nasty polyester tat for 40p a metre etc...sometimes a good stall at the sainsburys outside on a saturday....little shop still there selling zips and threads cheap.

bumblebee1000 · 05/11/2024 21:55

I’m in Norfolk but love a day trip so Colchester and Cambridge are on my list.

Definitely planning a day trip to London with my wheely suitcase! I was so disappointed when I went to Berwick Street, it used to be amazing. Thank you all for all the suggestions 😊
