after a sewing machine for beginner use and my daughter has taken textiles for GCSE so will be used at home for that.
Never used one before so no clue what I’m looking for

What's your budget?

I use Brother LS14 machines to teach on, and they're lovely sturdy wee workhorses, easy to use and learn to use, and there are loads of differentpresser feet that you can buy if and when you need them. I think there's a newer model, but it's essentially the same machine in a new dress.

Under £200 I think

My mums old 1960s Singer is still going strong! They just don't make them like that anymore!!! Try eBay for pre-loved and get it serviced, indestructible!

There's loads of brilliant machines under £200. The brother I mentioned was about £90.
My suggestion is to take your lass to a sewing machine retailer where she can try out different machines on display. She may have a strong positive reaction to one brand over the others.

Janome are a good brand.
If you think you will use it a lot, spend a little more for a sturdier machine with a few extra features/feet.

We bought this one for my DD when she was doing GCSE textiles

It's a great reliable machine

TossedSaladandSE · 23/10/2024 09:45

It's still going strong 3 years later and she uses it for all sorts.

TossedSaladandSE · 23/10/2024 09:50

Sorry we bought her this one

You are spot on there!

I am teaching myself to sew on a LS14 machine and I made some simple things like net curtains and zipper cases....I like the way the pedal speed is easy to control as my last one was a tearaway with the pedal (accelerator) and it would have finished the curtains and started on the carpet if I let it.
