I’m a newbie and want to buy a few bits and pieces to get started but don’t want to make mistakes and end up buying again because I’ve gone for the wrong thing! Thanks

I’ve got a friskars one. Not the current model. I’ve had it about 25 years, gets regular use. It’s easy to change the disk.

I think mines Fiskars as well. You exposed the cutting side of the wheel by squeezing the handle, that mechanism was recommended to me by the seller, she said that for years she had used the ones where you push a button with your thumb, which was v difficult to use with arthritis in her hand (in fact she said it had made her arthritis worse!)
It was a few quid more but deffo v easy to use, I'll try find a photo

The one on the right is the type that was recommended and that I bought.

I have the one on the right too!

Best to get on the habit of locking the blade when not using it.

Super!! Thanks! I’ll get one of those ones, unusual for people to recommend the same thing so that’s a good sign 😀

I cheat and have an accuquilt, the dies are quite pricey, (you can get them off eBay, but I'd caution against used dies as once they start to get blunt they don't cut the cloth so cleanly.). I use a self healing cutting mat with the dies instead of the ridiculously over priced accuquilt cutting mats. My cutter must be getting on for 20 years old, and in the time I've collected quite a few dies (squares, triangles, hexs, drunkards path, and robbing Peter to pay Paul.). I have a few appliqué dies too, but I can do 100s of different designs with the 14 patchwork dies in my collection.
I had a Friskars rotary cutter, but I could never get the precision I wanted, and I'd get irritated by my wonky cuttingBlush.
