Has anyone used "thread - like" wool before?

I was given a gift of wool (yarn?) that's not really spun tight - see photo. The top one is a chunky wool, the bottom is the one I'm talking about. It's basically 10 strands lightly gathered together. I'm concerned that it's going to keep catching and I'll pick up 8 of the 10 strands and it'll end up super messy.

Any advice? Or potential projects for it?

If you search the yarn on Ravelry you should find some projects.

I'd probably re-gift it though as I detest splitty yarns!

It will look lovely knitted up but you won't be able to watch TV while you're knitting and you will probably need some extra swear words

@Notthatcatagain🤣 I'll keep my swear words handy! It's not wool I would have chosen myself and it's not in colours I would have chosen myself either. I really like to watch TV while I knit too 😬

@Scampuss I didn't think of ravelry, thank you. I also don't think I'm going to like splitty yarns! I might just try a veeeery basic garter stitch blanket for the kids. Then the gifter can see I've used it and if it looks crap it's hidden in the bedrooms!

Good luck 😬

(I'm sure it will be fine, just go slow and test different needles to see which work best with it)

Could you weave with it? It would be ok as weft yarn.

Or crochet might be easier than knitting. I'm crocheting with 3 yarns held together at the moment.

Sounds like you have a lot of it - did someone buy a full pack, start it, quickly give up & pass the rest on? (Not speaking from experience of tempting fancy yarns, not at all. No.)

Sometimes a fancy yarn can be tamed visually by striping it with a plain one, which also gives you an easier yarn to work with every so often before it's back to the swear words. But then you'd be sewing in all those ends. Maybe a blanket of alernating plain & fancy squares?

Or the charity shop...

Just another point of view…. I’m knitting with this yarn at the moment. It is 5 strands wound together, not twisted, and it’s fine.

Recently I knitted a cardigan holding a strand from two different skeins together, and was more likely to miss a strand with that. I suppose I did that once every few 250-stitch rows.

Standard advice is to use blunt needles rather than sharp ones (like lace or stiletto points).

Thanks for the advice.
The gifter bought them especially for me because she knows I like knitting. (It wasn't a regift or purchase for herself). Six balls.
I'll give a blanket a go and stay positive!! I'll report back at some future point 😁
