Full skirt with waistband in corduroy - help with pattern

Help with finding one I mean, or how to actually create one without it as I can't find a skirt at all to buy. I want it midi length with a zip at the back and a waistband, possibly pockets, full (gathered into the waistband) but not a circle skirt if you know what I mean. I can't find a pattern either. Is it possible to make one without a pattern, any clues anyone please?

Have a look at assembly line patterns? Not totally clear what you are looking for, but there are a couple of options for fuller skirts. If you can post a pic of what you are looking for it might be helpful to make better recommendations.

(There are also various tutorials which show you how to draft a pattern for a skirt based on the circle idea but reduced to 1/2 or 3/4.,.)

How experienced a sewist (sewer??) are you? And what is the weight/whale of the corduroy?

I'd be careful about a heavy whale corduroy in a gathered skirt - you might want to look at soft pleats, or a semi circle skirt. And you'll need to make sure the nap all goes the same way - I like to make the waistband running along the warp thread (ie parallel to the selvedge) and then have the nap of the corduroy running down (most people will have the nap running up, but I don't like the feel of that, even if it's correct).

You might also think about ways that you'll support the hem of a full corduroy skirt, and I'd line it, or perhaps interline it, if you want that flare out look.

It really depends on what look you want - there are heaps of commercial patterns that you could use. I don't really rate the more independent patterns - their drafting & instructions are a bit hit & miss.

So do you want A-line, pleated, straight with some fulness, gathered full-ish, or very full?

And when you're looking at patterns, scrutinise the technical drawing and the notes - the notes on Vogue Patterns (they're the only ones I use!) are usually detailed and will describe the principles of the garment design eg "bias cut" or "A line" etc etc.

If you want to buy one, Seasalt have a couple of midi length cord skirts.

Great suggestions everyone, @YellowAsteroid I used to go to a sewing club but that folded after Covid, so I need some supervision !!! My friend helps me. I want fine cord not really too chunky.

So you should search for needlecord, or pincord. Or even uncut cord - which is a bit more like velveteen, but lovely.

Have you had a look at PatternReview.com ? A great place to start for real life sewers' experiences with patterns.

Just had an email from SewDirect - they have a half-price flash sale on patterns for the weekend. Might be worth a look @ValsCupcakes

@YellowAsteroid thank you so much!

It's a vicarious pleasure. I have many patterns (going back to the late 70s). I am not allowing myself to buy any more - so it's a pleasure to corrupt advise someone else Grin
