Cooking a deep pan cake.

I found a cake pan that I was looking for- tiffin pan to do my owl cake.www.surbitonart.co.uk/acatalog/Sugarcraft_Catalogue_Muffin_Tin_and_other_Special_cake_tins_134.html

Now I'm unsure about the recipe to use. Will a normal one do or should I adapt somehow?

You probably want to be in recipes or food?

Anyway, for a deep pan, I'd use a normal recipe, lower the temperature a little bit, and judge whether the cake is done by using a toothpick (which is what I do for all cakes, anyway).

Thanks NQC

My cake hasn't worked. Today is just a practise but my mixture is too heavy and the head fell off and I cant grate the chocolate (hmmph). Do I need a new peeler or is it the chocolate that's the problem?

Someone help me save the cake from the rejects pile. I've already made one disastrous Easter egg this year.

What sort of cake did you make? I've not done much in the way of chocolate grating.

staryeyed · 17/04/2008 18:48

Its going to be an upright owl so it needs to be quite sturdy. Im making with a tiffin pan (deep dome cake pan) then I am attaching a smaller cake on top. The bottom was ok but the head fell apart/off. The chocolate just wont grate I tried a knife cheese grater and a potato peeler. Im sure I have grated chocolate before.

I've grated it in a cheese grater, I think, one of those micropore ones?

I'm not sure that an upright owl is a very easy plan. Are you sure it couldn't be a lying down owl?

staryeyed · 17/04/2008 20:03

I did a laying down monkey last year.. I wanted to be a bit more adventurous.

I just need to get the consistency of the cake mixture right so it holds together I will be fine with the rest....and working out this chocolate grating business. I think I may invest in a new veg peeler.

After a long and tiring day- two failed cake attempts and a lot off figuring out about how to make those blardy feathers, I now have a standing up owl cake. Its nearly finished. Just a few finishing touches such as eyes and things to put on. Will post a picture tomorrow just before we ...scoff the lotmakes me wander why I did it . I really enjoyed it actually.
