That says it all really, I want a pattern for one of those wrap cardigans for a 3 year old!

I have no idea where to get one or where to get some really nice wool - maybe some kind of cashmere feel? I would like a nice fine stitch...

Can you tell I have no idea what I am doing Please help, this is supposed to be a special gift and the person knitting it is unable to get to the shops!

this is fancy

this is more a shrug

yorkishbirdy · 15/04/2008 21:50

Thanks dizzy, sadly the first is too fancy and the second is too small (goes to 24 months). THank you anyway, I am soo bad at this stuff!

I have a dancing school, lots of mums use this one. My own DD is only 2 so I have yet to knit one of these things, but am planning to start very soon

link took you to the big page, it's halfway down on the left. can't make it link to the page with just the one on.

Sirdar 4979 is a classic ballet cardigan that starts from age 3-4 (24 inch chest). A lovely DK yarn would be one of the cashmere mixes like Debbie bliss cashmerino DK, Rowan Classic Cashsoft or Sirdar Sublime. All of these are easily ordered online or over the phone, Ethknits for example are very helpful and would love to talk you through what you need.

yorkishbirdy · 15/04/2008 22:03

GW, thank you so much, but it doesn't go small enough good luck when you give it a try though - I can't imagine being able to knit an actual garment taht a person could wear - oh, I managed to french knit a scarf when I was 7 does that count

You don't have to knit a pattern in the exact yarn stated, BTW, as long as it's double knitting yarn for a double knitting pattern.

Looks like the twin of gigglewitch's pattern doesn't it!

florenceuk · 15/04/2008 22:07

what about this one in Rowan Babies? look at sweeten also a version here: sweeten I think this is 4-ply, there is an RYC yarn called cashsoft, or Debbie Bliss makes a Baby Cashmerino - have a look at any online yarn store e.g. Kangaroo, or go to John Lewis, to see shades.

I have this book too: ballerina wrap in Adorable knits for tots - this goes up to age 3-4, knitted in baby cashmerino.

gigglewitch · 15/04/2008 22:07

count me in too
was going to have to do clever things with the "wendy" pattern to fit my very little DD. now won't have to try being clever

blithedance · 15/04/2008 22:10

This one goes a bit smaller. sorry obviously x-posting!

Get knitted are great to order from too, they always send me a free pen

lackaDAISYcal · 15/04/2008 22:10

is this any good? It's from 1 year upwards.

I think there is one in the Debbie Bliss book..."adorable knits for tiny tots", but I lent it to a friend so can't check.

lackaDAISYcal · 15/04/2008 22:11

oops, by Zoe Mellor, not Debbie Bliss!!

EachPeachPearMum · 15/04/2008 22:30

'Sweeten' goes up to age 5 (5x50g balls 4ply).
If you want the pattern, cat me

yorkishbirdy · 15/04/2008 22:31

Ok, thanks everyone that is great! I have ordered a double knit pattern and some cashmerino dk wool, I think I have enough wool to knit the pattern in both the current size and the next size up - just in case they feel like doing two

I really hope that I have done this right, still I can send it all back and start again if need be I guess!

Thanks again all I really appreciate the help

Oh - just a thought how do you allow for loose/tight knitting? Should I add another ball of wool to the order just in case?

EPPM, thank that is really kind of you!

GW, glad this was helpful to you too, I can't imagine trying to scale down a pattern (althought I would probably be better at that than at knitting it!)
