Which beginner sewing machine?

I would like an upgrade from the mini sewing machine we have. It has ten stitches and is perfectly functional, but I want to be able to do more. I have used a Brother A16 on a workshop and loved it. Is this the best option? Or the A15 (which doesn’t have automatic needle threader but is otherwise the same I think).
I would like to try simple clothes. I don’t think I need any more complicated than what these two can do. Do I?
DD would want to use it for free embroidery. Do I just need a different foot for that or something more?

I am a beginner and I am going to get one of the John Lewis Janome sewing machines. They seem to get some great reviews from buyers.

Basic janome .
It's same make they use on the Great British Sewing bee
.
I sew a lot.. have a sewing room and it meets my needs.
I got mine from Dunhelm.

I recently bought a bernette which is a simpler machine from bernina who make the best machines. Very simple to use and i highly recommend it.

Bernina are the Rolls-Royce of machines, and as such come with a Rolls-Royce price tag....DS has one, and I'm so envious!!
OP I've gone through numerous machines😬 (it's why I'm allowed to look but not touch DS' Bernina!) my Janome has managed to put up with my gormless sewing exploits better than any other machine, my singer and brother got fed up with me and died a death! (I'm a total tool and constantly forget to lift the press foot when turning the fabric, which of course results in fabric chewed dogs and bobbin explosions!).

Can highly recommend Silver Viscount 302. It is so easy and pleasing to use, British made, lightweight but sturdy, sews absolutely anything together however thick or unwieldy. I use it for making clothes and for quilting. I’m amazed they’re not more popular, it’s a fantastic machine.

Found this thread. I got a Brother JK2500NT a couple of years ago. I’ve not used it much because it’s so..clunky. There’s no speed settling, it’s foot control only and its tipping point goes from nothing to zoom! Difficult to control. I’m thinking of selling it and putting that money towards a machine with a speed control and wondered what the best value for money sewing machine might be?

Just to add that I just ordered my basic John Lewis/Janome machine yesterday.

I noticed they had a some discounts on the machines for the bank holiday weekend so perfect timing!

Look on eBay. I've bought a couple of machines on that and especially if you know the make model etc you want. You can then get a higher model often for similar price. If your DD wants to do embroidery then a super basic one will not cut it I'd say.
I've always used Brothers and I find them great.

John Lewis - they're made by Janome, reliable and do stitch well.
One of these https://www.johnlewis.com/janome-open-toe-embroidery-darning-foot/p301548 for the free stitch

Go for a mid range Jerome they are excellent and used on the great British sewing bee.
