Help with cutting/sewing towelling

I'm going to have a go at making the children's dragon dressing gown from the Sewing Bee. Used to sew a lot (decades ago) but seem to have forgotten most of it! I've printed off the pattern and stuck it together, so that bit's done. Am I best to use a rotary cutter and cut through the pattern and towelling at the same time, or cut out the pattern pieces and then cut the towelling round the pieces afterwards iyswim? Would you use a rotary cutter or scissors if you do it that way?

I've not sewn with towelling before, have got a walking foot to use and am going to take it slowly bearing in mind it'll be impossible to unpick! Thanks so much in advance.

I am not an expert, but i would suggest cutting the pattern first and then cutting out the pattern pieces. Read and reread the instructions! And make a note, are the seam allowances included or not?

Best of luck, and hope some other experienced sewists come along!

Thank you. That makes sense with the fabric being so thick. Yes, seam allowances are included; will definitely read very carefully, am normally a bit gung ho, not this time!

I think I’d put masking tape on the fabric pattern on top and then cut through both. Then I’d sew through the masking tape and fabric and then peel it off.

Why have I never thought of cutting out the pattern as well as the fabric at the same time?! Genius idea!

I wouldn't cut through the pattern and the fabric at the same time as it'll blunt your rotary cutter. I'd cut the pattern, use pattern weights rather than pins, then use the clip things to pin your fabric together and a walking foot. I've made a few oodies and would treat towelling the same as fleece

Thanks everyone, really helpful. As the fabric is so thick I'll cut the pattern out first and then the fabric like oodie fabric Wink Fascinated by the masking tape way though!
