Do I need permission?

Asking for a friend actually who doesn't use Mumsnet.

She had an embroidery business and supplies uniform for two local schools.

She has sought permission from these schools. Parents can buy their own uniform and bring it to her to be embroidered or she provides the complete item.

Does she actually need permission to do this? Parents from other schools have asked her to do work and she's unsure if she is allowed to.

Is the embroidery in line with the Uniform policy?

I could be wrong but,
I would assume that most school logos/badges, like most businesses, are copyright of the school and therefore maybe she would need permission to use them for monetary gain.

It's identical to the school logo and other items of uniform that has been embroidered elsewhere.

Do they actually copy write them though? I've just been part of starting a new school and I don't think we've done that. We employed a graphic designer to make the logo though.

I would assume that the school logo is copyright protected but confirmation from the school should be sought

By default, copyright belongs to whoever created the logo – the creator does not have to assert they own it or anything else. It's just theirs. The creator may have passed ownership of the copyright to the school or given them exclusive use of it. Either way, it's better to ask the school. Plus, if the school gives permission, she may be able to say she has the school's approval.
