I'm sure there must be an easy/cheap way of doing those baby cast things yourself.

Do places like Hobby craft sell the clay and what have you that you need.

I was thinking of maybe buying some plasticine and using is to push DD's feet into, then fill it with plaster??

Does anyone have any advice?

I've made plaster of paris hand prints before, using plaster of paris in a plastic plate, then pushing the hand into it and leaving it to dry and then painted it. In fact, I used to do them for all the children at the summer camp I worked in eons ago.

Maybe you could adapt this advice

Warning to any Dads reading this - you may not want to see this....

i've made handprints using play-doh
1/ make a disc of play-doh
2/ push hand into it
3/ fill hand print with plaster of paris
4/ leave to set
5/ pull off play-doh
6/ clean up plaster edges
7/ use some paint to highlight fingerprints
skin texture

done great easy and cheap

Even cheaper if you make your own playdough...

I've done it too - works well.

SoupDragon · 06/04/2008 18:25

RustyBear, do you think they could be used as door knobs?

VanillaPumpkin · 06/04/2008 18:25

My friend did ours with dentist gel stuff that they use for teeth casts. I am not sure where she got it from though. Lol at that link

RustyBear · 06/04/2008 18:58

In a brothel maybe Soupy...
There's a shop on the way to M&S which always makes us laugh - it's called The Knob Shop.

I tried a home kit with my DS but couldn't get his feet still enough so in the end I just gave up.

Hopeysgirlwasntbig · 06/04/2008 21:40

Well that's my project for the coming weeks.

Soupdragon, do you have a recipe for playdough?

RustyBear, i remember in London there was a shop called 'Knobs and Knockers'

any air drying clay will do. to do a hand cast you'd need modroc which is like plaster of paris. you have to put tons of vaseline on the hand too, prob not easy with a small child.

SoupDragon · 07/04/2008 09:38

Playdoh Recipe
1 Mug Plain Flour
1 Mug of Water
1/2 Mug of Salt
2tsp Cream of Tartar
1 tablespoon of oil
Food Colouring (choose your own amount depending on how strong a colour you require)

1 Mix all ingredients together and sieve
2 Heat, stirring constantly until smooth ball forms
3 Remove from heat
4 Knead for several minutes
5 Allow to cool. Keep in an airtight container

Press it into a plastic tub, and push the child's hand or foot in (feet are easier for a young baby), check to make sure you've not pressed right down to the bottom of the tub though. Then you can pour plaster of paris in. When it's dry, you get a raised hand/footprint - obviously if you press into clay, you get an imprint.

Thank you SoupDragon, you're a star x

I did my dd's hand and foot the same way - by using a plasticine mould.

Soupdragon - does homemade last ok? or does it dry out quickly?
