Its not going everywhere but its not held in place-it jumps a little and I have to hold it very firmly.

It is very battered and mainly held together with gaffer tape .

I know nowt about these things but I don't think this is right, is it?

I suspect the foot (?) is not as close as it should be to the place it , um, should be .

(and yes I've pressed the little lever to make it come down)
any thoughts good

It would be the tension on the bobbin area. If you look under the foot you should see some teeth (they look like metal hills). On my machine there's a wheel on the right hand side, I turn it and it lifts the teeth up. They hold on to the fabric and push it through the machine. If the foot is not very tight then this will also cause this. If you look at the back where the foot is attached there is normally a key type shape, if you turn it you will be able to adjust the foot.

What fabric is it? Is it silky stuff? Is it stitching or skipping stitches

I agree with tension/bobbin. These are usually cause of all problems on machines

oh dear

the underneath bit where the bobbin is is held together and attatched to the machine with duct tape

i suspect this may be the problem and if so, theres nothing I can do, I suspect

oh its quite firm fabrics, like cotton (am making dd a dress from teatwels
